what happened to free speech in america?

now speech seems to cost

“Are there limits to free speech? Is some speech so hateful that it should be punished? This week a jury said yes, saying a fringe church must pay nearly $11 million in damages for disturbing a funeral.” ~ By JOHN STOSSEL, RUTH CHENETZ and PATRICK MCMENAMIN

obviously these ‘church people’ lack something important. LIKE A SOUL descency…something

but if this story is a matter of speech

what happened to free speech in America?

Hate speech laws are intended to deter us all from being gratuitously mean to one another. I think it’s a good idea. If you’re going to insult someone, do it constructivley or at least in a way that doesn’t scream “I’m irrational and pugnacious!”. I’m especially glad that it’s a church having to pay all that money. I hate churches.

Free speech has never been unlimited.

Besides, this was a civil trial, no? It wasn’t a private party v. the government.

I didn’t read the link, but I think I recall this whole affair.

They’ve been making it their business to invade the privacy of families at a most intimate and grief stricken time for the sake of getting publicity for their political causes. Taunting the mothers of men who gave their lives for a country while those men are being put to rest. That’s not free speech, it’s harassment, and it’s not only tacky, but utterly disgraceful. I think they should lose their tax free status or something for comitting such crimes.

I remember one case. They have done it more than once?

Punks. Just really need their asses kicked. Which I wouldn’t rule out.

It became corporatized by the media along with father god the state.

But that’s what they wanted because they’re money grubbing godmongers who were out to pimp themselves for publicity and to seek support from other extremists.

You can say what you want…‘‘If you have the money’’. :unamused:

Enjoy the freedom while you can, it won’t be there much longer. People are arrested for speaking out against our government these days, and are being called “terrorists” for doing so.

This wasn’t about terrorists speaking out against the govt. Who got arrested for that? These godmongers were disrupting funerals. Don’t they have any respect for anything?

I was referring to something else, but yes I’ve heard about this some time ago. Its messed up that these religious idiots would do such a thing. They said that god is killing our soldiers because we are allowing gay marriages in America. I would’ve been willing to take the legal punishments if I could’ve wasted these people with a crowbar.

Imagine a mob of angry philosophers who’ve given up on reason and taken to crowbars!! Count me in!!

he brought a crowbar to a gunfight…

Use the crowbar on em after you shoot em. That’ll make em give up their leader!! Screw the Geneva Convention!!!

Because any crimminal act can be considered terrorism, and a terrorist is not protected by rights. Speaking against your country, no matter how much it sucks, is treason.

However according to the constitution, we have every right to do so. Of course with the Bush administration, they break the rule of the fourth amendment as well with the Patriot Act.

when did foreign enemies gain their constitutitional rights?

“A Baltimore jury said the Westboro Baptist Church was too vulgar and offensive to be covered by the First Amendment.”

abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=3812344&page=1

If this is the reason for penalizing the Westboro Baptisit Church, then the church members are denied one of their First Amendment Rights.

This shows that Americans really have no ‘rights’ or at least only some do.

Also, what can be implied about the Juriers.

Yes. NOT all speech is coverd HOWEVER, it use to only apply to speech that cause a risk of dange to the public.

Now, one can be penalized for just offending someone else, with consideration of the jury.

what every happened to ‘sticks and stones’ O well I guess

newspeak is coming
