“Are there limits to free speech? Is some speech so hateful that it should be punished? This week a jury said yes, saying a fringe church must pay nearly $11 million in damages for disturbing a funeral.” ~ By JOHN STOSSEL, RUTH CHENETZ and PATRICK MCMENAMIN
Hate speech laws are intended to deter us all from being gratuitously mean to one another. I think it’s a good idea. If you’re going to insult someone, do it constructivley or at least in a way that doesn’t scream “I’m irrational and pugnacious!”. I’m especially glad that it’s a church having to pay all that money. I hate churches.
They’ve been making it their business to invade the privacy of families at a most intimate and grief stricken time for the sake of getting publicity for their political causes. Taunting the mothers of men who gave their lives for a country while those men are being put to rest. That’s not free speech, it’s harassment, and it’s not only tacky, but utterly disgraceful. I think they should lose their tax free status or something for comitting such crimes.
But that’s what they wanted because they’re money grubbing godmongers who were out to pimp themselves for publicity and to seek support from other extremists.
Enjoy the freedom while you can, it won’t be there much longer. People are arrested for speaking out against our government these days, and are being called “terrorists” for doing so.
This wasn’t about terrorists speaking out against the govt. Who got arrested for that? These godmongers were disrupting funerals. Don’t they have any respect for anything?
I was referring to something else, but yes I’ve heard about this some time ago. Its messed up that these religious idiots would do such a thing. They said that god is killing our soldiers because we are allowing gay marriages in America. I would’ve been willing to take the legal punishments if I could’ve wasted these people with a crowbar.
Because any crimminal act can be considered terrorism, and a terrorist is not protected by rights. Speaking against your country, no matter how much it sucks, is treason.
However according to the constitution, we have every right to do so. Of course with the Bush administration, they break the rule of the fourth amendment as well with the Patriot Act.
