whats life? the progress between birth and death.
whats time? a measure of progression
Oh, you surely are allowed to
But would it be the correct one?
What is life?
I believe life is knowing.
What do you mean by “knowing”? Is it simple posession of information, or consciousness, or… ?
whats life? the progress between birth and death.
whats time? a measure of progression
So you believe that the dimension of time is nesessary for life to exist…? Or, probably, life is another dimention itself?
Life is what you live.
Life is what you live.
Life is what I live? ![]()
P.S. I like your avatar
“I” generally speaking.
P.S. There’s more where that came from. ![]()
Oh, I see. You know, it’s awesome. But “life” and “live” are pretty much the same word. Is it rational, to give definition to a word, when the definition includes the word? ![]()
“Alive”:
System is still operational.
“Life”:
Able to change and survive as time goes on. Is a structure and a system.
More complex forms of life vs the simplest forms of life – on earth. This helps you differenciate with the core meaning of alive/life, vs advanced/sentient.
i think existance is necessary before life can be measured. time is a measure of the earths and everything in its progression through space. does time mean anything if we don’t have obligations? no, our awareness has a varying
capacity for understanding, as we became more active, we needed time as a standard for schedualing. if i’m going to work i better know the same time as my employer give or take minuits. it takes a particular ammount of time to do anything, time is a necessary measure of existance. time has no meaning outside its relation the existance. existance is always either changing or resting, we as humans have a capacity for change, what motivates any personal change is our beliefs. we come across situations, we try to make the best of them, we learn from them, resulting in us changing or re-affirming our beliefs. this molds our view of the world, wether correctly or not depends on the end result. or how in tune our beliefs are with the truth or reality of any situation.
I could write a novel on life but life would remain what I live, not what I wrote.
“Life”:

It looks like a definition. Interesting. So, you directly connect life with time.
More complex forms of life vs the simplest forms of life – on earth. This helps you differenciate with the core meaning of alive/life, vs advanced/sentient.
Are you trying to say, that, let’s say, bacteria is “less alive” then humans are? If so, what gives you confidence to state this?
time is a necessary measure of existance
Time does not exist inside of the black holes. However, something still exists inside of them. Or time does not exist for a particle, which travels with a speed of light. The particle still exists. So, probably time has no meaning outside it’s connection with existance, but existance has it’s meaning without time.
the old saying goes action speaks louder than words. thought is the mental act of planning out our physical actions. the efficiency of any action is only known after we try it. so the efficiency of people is gaged by the efficiency of peoples actions. if either the reasoning or excecution are lacking flaws arise in the result. there are not many things i can do perfectly but the knowledge of my imperfections gives me the possibility for improvement. having knowledge of my limitations is what allows me to operate effectively in any environment. the increase my effectiveness as a person i need to increase the effectiveness of my thought and actions. to increase the effectiveness of thought or action i need experiance. so i consider experiance the source of
all knowledge, physical or theoretical. the ability to differentiate truth from fiction, good from bad, stems from our beliefs. if we treat every question critically, and are careful in examining all the pertinent(related) information on an issue before we believe something, we will have a greator share in truth and less in falsity. that said, truth and falsity have no share in preference. no one can tell me what i can and can’t prefer. they can only tell me what i can and can’t believe.

it seems that you rally enjoy the idea, that “life is what you live”. I don’t see much sense in trying to convince you in something different. But what does this definition gives you? Comfort? Or you just have fun giving me a hard time? ![]()

When you can tell me what you’re doing right now is not living and what you’re in right now is not life, I’ll give you a hard time.
Trevor_W,
I agree that time is nesessary for consciousness to exist. it is also nesessary for all the forms of “life” we know. But I suggest, that we are too ignorant to state whether time is nesessary for LIFE, because we can’t even say what LIFE is.
SilentSoliloquy,
yes, I think I’m alive now. And yes, life is what you live. Yes. And a DVD player is a thing that plays DVD’s.

i consider a black hole(if they exist) to be the opposite of the big bang(if it exists) big bang=everything came from a singularity(i’m no physicist)
black hole=everything goes toward a singularity. time still exists for a particle moving at the speed of light. they just cover more distance per unit of time than things which move slower. speed is distance divided by time. nothing can exist without time passing as it passes from one moment to the next in irreversible order. if your house burned down yesterday where would you sleep tonight? nature brings things into existance. everything in existance has
a natural way it will react in any situation. anything organic will burn if it comes into contact with a flame or intense heat. sciences try to find the nature of how things react with each other. psychologists try to find out how our mind reacts to the body and its environment. physicists try to find out how matter and energy react with each other.
what do you think philosophers try to find out?
life is a word used to sum up the progress between birth and death.
’ time’ during life passes in irreversible order. as we evolved we developed a need for time as a schedualing device. as soon as we make a decision which commits us to future obligations(school, work) we need time. time isn’t always as necessary as our physiological needs, because we can be alive without ever knowing the time(severely mentally handicapped people), but to succeed in a modern society, time is a factor i have to consider. i know i have 21 years behind me and i’ve accomplished very little. i also hope i have at least 50 years in front of me to accomplish my future goals.
Trevor_W,
it seems to me, that you hold on to the old idea that time is a permanent thing, a “background”. It is not. You’re not a physicist, me either, so I won’t argue about speed of light etc. (too ignorant to do that). You apply to the 4 - dimentional world while giving your examples. You’re giving examples which were born in a time-containing environment. You can’t really imagine the “no time” environment (I can’t either). But I’m sure that there are more dimentions in the universe. We are too ignorant to do any bold statements.
Philosophers? I consider philosophy to be a necessary product of intelligence. It’s a part of human nature - constant search. All the searches are searches for thruth. So, philosophers are searching for truth.
