What is shame and what is proper?

To the west shame and what is proper may be different to the east.

So how do we know what is shameful and what is proper?
Does this mean human beings are free or determined?

Dan… you’ve just opened up a whole box of relativisms… I’m not sure what you want to discuss…

It’s almost like asking, what’s regular and irregular…

Can you explain more directly?

“Humans are the only animals who know shame–or need to.”–Mark Twain

shame and proper are defined by parents. The difference lies in society or social.

Once you are young you are told what is shame and proper by your parents, but you refuse and listen to the public and friends, and believe them, by purchasing brand name clothes, have a certain type of hair style, have a number of girlfriends, making money. After all that, once they step to the real world, they go through a lot of suffering and believe what their parents had told them. Once they have a baby, the cycle starts over again. SAMASARA>

Dan,
From a physical POV, the feeling of shame may be one of those emotionalized drives that prompt remedial action such as pain, fear or guilt. Maybe not. I remember shame as taught by family and society. So natually I would question its value for me. Yet, I still believe that all such impulses must have some value, even if I cannot understand what it is. Can you help me understand this?

As far to my knowledge, shame and proper is made up by the society where you live in, the laws that you were to abide with. Therefore, not only you live by the code that was set up by the gov’t but also in the social relationship in school or work, and maybe even family.

Shame and proper was influentialialy defined by one sophist I think the text or name was Dissoi Logoi, or Iamblicus?

But anyhow, shame is a feeling that was done after an action that you did , for the sake of pride or pleasure. What proper is a reflection or taken into consideration what kind of action that you will do would lead you to injustice or justice.
