What is the beauty of religion ?

OR what is the beauty of philosophy?

why does religion attract a number of audience? What is the attraction?

A struggle for understanding. Just as some find beauty in sporting events due to its struggle many find it in the struggle for knowledge or a purpose.

philosophy makes people think
religion makes people think

people=like to think

=)

I think hassooni has summed it up just fine.

I see a few things we’ve missed though,

Some religions, mine at least, offer hope, purpose for themselves. This is something an accidental universe cannot give infinitely.

8But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

If you want it, this is it, i’m putting it out there for you to take. It’s a free gift.

Religion is usually given by birth and changed throughout the course of ones life. Religion initially thinks for one, then eventually makes one think. The beauty is the peace and the values that religion bring to the many. Its goal to bring love and peace into the hearts of us all a noble one.

Philosophy is learned through and changed throughout ones life. It begins and ends by thought. It is a process that helps one define ones thoughts on all things from sleep to existence in attempt to better understand the world we all live in. It is an almost endless cycle of learning and questioning – beautiful from beginning to end.

Religion exists because people need to believe.
Philosophy exists because people need to think.

The beauty in religion is its ability to calm the panic of everyday life. It helps soothe fears and worrys. It takes the most tragic situations and brings some good. Religion is a huge security blanket for the soul. It is weatherproof, warm when its cold and cool when its warm. It protects against perceived evils like an invisibility shield. This is its beauty.

if it is true that religion is to make people think, then those who goes to church at sunday are gooing in vain. Either the people heard the sermon already, or they don’t listen, or they cannot question the priest.

=D> I may just use that in bible studies if I am not lazy.
I am starting to like this question. What is the bauty of

Who said, the beauty of philosophy teaches you to think?

where is the beauty, given you to think and situations never solved.
This is the truth , you are given a lost what you should do, and arguement comes foreward, but at the end you don’t comply. How vainful.

I’d argue that religion taps into the sublime, something which we all want to be a part of.

Fear

An attempt to alleviate that fear

I think you’ve said it well. It’s sad that Religion attracts many because they fear, and the fear of the unknown is supposed to be the greatest fear. This however does not make someone a Christian(Directing this toward my beliefs), just a church goer. I’m not sure what I believe about the ones who claim to be Christians, claimed to have gotten saved, and live a life apart and degress from God. We need to talk to a Soteriologist to find out more about this matter however.

Who is Soteriologist? I am hearing this word for the first time and google could not help me.

For most people in the world, religion, like their language is given. Not many people choose their religions nor question their beliefs throughout their life. It is like mother’s homemade food -familiar since childhood and hence the best in the world. Anything that is familiar gives comfort and security.

I like the word fear.

But why would someone study the bible ? Because of fear? Is it not love of wisdom? Love and devotion of the words?

Hm… robo, that’s weird… A soteriology is the study of salvation, I’m not sure if they’ve derived the word soteriologist yet, it’s not in the dictionary at least, but soteriology is.

Yes, I’d have to say I agree to the fullest. It’s one problem when concerning religion. I have a tough time talking plural and defending all religions when I speak about religion in general. But I will say around my area, Christianity is like what you say, it’s comforting, it’s like mother’s homemade food. This however does not make someone a Believer, it is apart from church going and the like. But, in my area, “the bible belt”, people just go as it’s a thing to do, or a thing you should do, they never discuss why, and you’d be surprised to find out certain people go to church. You are almost certain they’re not Christians by their actions, and they never talk of Church, but they go… I’m not sure what they really think about believing and spirituality though. It’s almost as if, yes, for security purposes, I shall go to church(even though that’s not the path in at least Christianity) and I shall be saved, but I will live like satan, because in certain Christian beliefs, such as mine, we believe you cannot lose your salvation… this however is a topic worth discussing, but I have yet to do so because I fear it will be interrupted by atheistic attacks.

You are right. There is a word called Soteriology but not Soteriologist in the dictionary. Anway, even the word Soteriology is new for me (English is not my first language and I am not a religious person). Thanks club for teaching me a new word, today.

Is it not the definition of who is a true Christian, very subjective? For you, people who do not discuss about the Church or the Bible beliefs is not a Christian. For a fundamentalist who believes the Bible literally, you might not be Christain enough because you discuss and question the Bible. For Nietschze, no one is true Christian except Jesus (No, I do not want to get in to the discussion of how Jesus cannot be a Christian

People read bible, may be, to reassure their beliefs, to strengthen their beliefs so that they will have the motivation/courage to follow what their religion demands from them to attain salvation (and hence not burn in hell). There is definitely, lot of wisdom in bible as in many great books like the Aesop fables.

What I’m saying is, we cannot give the definition of who’s a Christian and who isn’t. A Christian is someone who’s been filled with Christ. People who don’t live like Christ need to make sure they have a personal relationship with him, because if you love God you won’t want to disobey him.

You see it’s always look at as if, “If you Recieve God, you have to quit living in sin” No it’s false. You don’t ‘have’ to do anything. I’ve found when I have a good relationship with God at particular times when my faith has been great as now, you will ‘want’ to please God, It’s a want, not a have to.

What is the beauty of mathematics?

What is beauty?

Answer that, and I can answer your question.
