What is the most awkward talk you had with a professor?

A couple nights ago at a religion honor society social, I had a bit too much wine and babbled and ranted about sex and crushes and who knows the what the hell else in front of a couple professors (and a professor’s daughter) and students. It’s funny when I look back at it and it certainly was fun at the time. However, I was a bit worried about whether or not I actually said anything inappropriate and so I apologized to my professors…Have any of you had similar experiences? How did you react after realizing what you did or said?

  1. Getting drunk on my last day of secondary school on red wine and flirting heavily with my English Literature teacher

  2. Getting drunk and stoned at my philosophy dept. Christmas party and arguing with everyone that I could find, including throwing unlit cigarettes at several unfortunate students

  3. Sober: Accusing my present English literature tutor of being incompetent. I should probably await the outcome of all the disciplinary bureaucratic bullshit before commenting in public on that particular event

Having to discuss the ethics of abortion a couple of days after having watched one take place at almost 15 weeks.

That and unwittingly getting angry about Kant with a Kant Scholar, and talking about how rubbish Wittgenstein was to someone I didn’t know was a Wittgenstein scholar (although he of course quite agreed).

Having to explain to my math prof. that I failed the Calculus exam because thee police raided my dorm room the night before.

Oh man, was that ever awkward. Fortunately, a similar thing had recently happened to his daughter and he was very understanding.

calling a teacher stupid for not knowing anything about her particular subject

and asking that same teacher if she was ever going to teach us anything when she wrote notes on the board and talked to her friend on the phone all period

Hmm, I was in high School at the time. In fact it was a high school for “troubled kids” I attended school at night. one fo our teachers took us to the UofA for a college entrance exam. To give us an idea of the discipline it takes and how bad we were, to help us aspire to greater goals then partying and causing hell. Well, before the exam our teacher brought in a calculas professor. We were told that the person that could beat their scores on the exam would get a milk shake as a reward. OK picture the dregs of high school getting excited over a shake, Yea, that happens(sarcasam).

Anyway, we took the test, I finished first, even before the professor and teacher. My teacher read me the riot act, told me that I should have tried harder and that quiting was going to keep me down ,blah, blah, blah. Some of other kids of coursed laughed at me and threw insults at me. I threw my share back. the prof. looked at me as if i were the most disgusting thing he ever saw. I did sort of start feeling uncomfortable at that point.

The test proceeded, then finished. A person came in and took the tests, half an hour later the scores were brought back. To teach me a lesson in humiliation, the prof. asked the the person who had the lowest score while he was watching me with a smarmy look. It was not me. He was rather surprised at that. He then asked if a student had beat his score.

The answer was yes. Ahhhh, the look on his face, when my name was announced is forever etched in my mind, I busted out laughing which was rude I know but, it was so funny. The prof. was mad, he accused me of cheating of just guessing of being, well, he ranted anyway while I was trying to compose myself into just giggles. I was asked by the teacher to retake the test in a room alone. Yep, I still beat the prof. and I did it in less time. the akward part was, the prof. convinced that I still cheated somehow, denied my test, (Of course my smiling and giggles did not help) then he refused to reward me, then the other students went up in arms. The teacher took the prof out of the room, after a bit, they came back. the prof. came up to me, apologized then asked me how could I possibly know the answers. I could only say I read alot. He looked at me leaned over and whispered that such an amount of knowledge if it actually is true, is wasted on a slut that will end up in jail. He whispered a bunch of other BS about me, I just looked up at him. He had succeeded, he made me feel like crap, I dropped out of school and never went back. I of course some years later, realized my error. but, it was too late. Ten yrs. after I dropped out of High school I went and passed my GED with out studying.

Lesson : Authority figures are human too, Profesors have egos and they are not always as smart as the think they are. Plus never allow anyone to make you feel rotten about yourself. Only you can control your self esteem, allowing someone else to control it ruins your chances.

omg, kris, what a f*ckin disgrace :frowning:

True, that is a disgrace. If that had happened to someone that I knew I’d probably have stalked and traumatised that bastard professor…
:imp:

Ditto. Still, please tell me you turned out alright in the end.

Yeah, that just proves everything I always tell my students, KW. Though I’m not sure if I’d tell them the siatd’s method of dealing with such a piece of scum…Actually, knowing me, I’d probably tell them that I would do the same thing…

Wish I could share some of the “awkward” conversations my students have had with me… :sunglasses:

Hey, it’s an anonymous forum . . . as long as you aren’t Debra Lafave, I’m sure if you change the names it’ll be all good.

No…Of course, it’s not likely that anybody would be able to recognize the student. However, I do keep my students’ conversations confidential, as I do with clients. It’s only fair. Besides, I keep finding out just how tiny this world is, so with my luck, the student him/herself would actually see the post and feel like shit. Wouldn’t be the first time one of my students stumbled onto this site and recognized me…

Actually I learned a great deal from that Prof. He taught me humility, to never look down on someone and to be proud of myself. I threw away organized schooling but, I have never stopped learning.

Besides folks, think how rotten he must have felt. He was bested by someone who he thought of as trash.LOL. It hurt then but,not now and has not since my early 20s. I realized that he was trying to revenge his wounded ego by trashing my ego. I would bet it may still push his button if he ever thinks about it. I only wish I had enough confidence then to have reported him. Being a student that was considered a troublemaker by authority, I had no confidence that I would have been believed. Authority is not always right and a problem student is not always wrong. He was smart enough to whisper so that only I heard his trash. I feel I came out on top anyway. I learned certain values.
Dreg student; 1pt. / Arrogant Prof.; 0pt.

Whoa. I am glad that you have put it all into perspective, but that sure was a totally messed up event when it happend. What a pathetic, miserable and sad little man.

I thank my parents for teaching us kids to think, to learn, to grow from mistakes errors that we make and others make.
Yea, he sure was pathetic miserable, little and sad. I am old enough now to pity such a creature.

The worst part is, I have never gotten that milk shake.

One time I asked a teacher what color her nail polish was. She responnded with ‘purple’ but it was a very very dark purple. So I retorted with 'No, it’s black… black like your heart!"

But she liked me so the whole class had a good laugh. Me and that prof liked to joke around… she’d call me a tall genetic freak, I’d tell her her twin daughters were hot. Ahh grade 10… those were the days.

Then another time a prof in university told me she’d see me after class for talking. I told her ‘no you won’t’ I laughed slightly. It’s so much more fun when you pay tuition.

Mostly I’ve been in trouble for joking around too much… I’m more tame now. Occasionally I need to get a little condescending though. Like tomorrow I have to go and argue to this non-philosophy TA teaching a philosophy course that my essay on the internet’s affect on the enviroment is valid even though I’m not talking about the biosphere aspect of the enviroment. Is it such a revolutionary concept that humans and animals exist as part of the enviroment as well?

I don’t think so…
