What qualitys do you appreciate in a poster at ILP?

i did not create this thread as a popularity contest. with that in mind i admire most in a poster @ ilp:humor,friendlyness/niceness and truth/honesty the most.

I tend to prefer humor, insightfulness, interesting viewpoints, and a cool personality.

I appreciate people who can spell properly, especially the titles of their threads; I also appreciate people who are not so petty and arrogant as to point out minor spelling errors… :sunglasses:

Agreement.

Actually, someone I can agree with –
if the poster “sees” some true facet of the world
I had not thought of yet – or who puts his thought better than I could.
(I keep a mental list of who is my latest “favorite poster” is.)

humor goes both ways: able to throw in a funny post once in a while, and able to take a joke

also insightfulness, good nature, not extremist viewpoints, and intelligence

I don’t think i’ve ever heard “extremist viewpoints” in regards to philosophy. I’m curious as to what you mean by “extremist”, and what basis you have for defining a philosophy as such. In addition, do you automatically disregard a philosophical system if you veiw it as “extreme”, in the same way that someone might disregard a political extremist. Also, does the middle of the road hold more truth on every issue, and as such the only thing you find worth discussing about are fine details within a “moderate” framework?

I prefer those who are funny, capable of stirring up controversy, insulting, offensive, maintain ludicrous opinions, refuse to defend them properly, argue for no good reason and dick about when the going gets tough.

I’ve not come across all these in a single poster as yet, though I keep looking…

One who doesnt post as if they ‘know’ something and imply that they have some kind of ‘higher knowledge’.

Humility, similarity (to me), good grammar, and appropriate use of emoticons…

Brevity.

Right on! =D>

I hesitate to say it (because there’s a certain lack of it on ILP) but I admire a poster with a great deal of humility. Probably more than anything else. I’d rather read someone who knows what they believe, yet is not so arrogant as to assume that they are right all the time.

Oh, and I get a lot of laughs from the monkey man. Keep on keepin on, OG.

Not the rest of them, but I can think of someone who gets all of the above.

i like it when people dig as far down into their beliefs as possible, looking for what exactly causes them. when someone truly digs into what forms their belief, thats where they can find whatever it is that will lead them to the next level.

you could find out that you are wrong, or you could find out that one part of the foundation of your belief is the one thats important, and the rest of the sub beliefs that seem like they should come along with it really arent neccesary.

the problem is when people just skim the top of their beliefs, and they never look below to see what is really causing them. the thing that makes a great poster is someone who not only looks deep into the causes of his beliefs, but who actually writes it here for me to read. that way, when i type up my huge response that fully takes into account all the causes of my belief as far as im capable of looking, i actually have something to compare and contrast it to, instead of just hoping that somebody reads it and gets a full understanding of only half the picture.

[when im typing directly from my brain like on ilp, i can easily type over 100 wpm. so, in case you were wondering, jerry, yes. that contributes to why i post so gigantically much]

also, i dont see any need for humility as long as you are capable of hearing other people, responding sufficiently, and catering to the knowledge seeking whims of people who you arrogantly consider inferior. if you can be hilariously arrogant while doing those things, i think thats better. if you cant do those three things, i cant possibly imagine why you would come to this website

Hey I actually thought of you the other day cause I… saw a bowl of oranges.

In answer to the question I admire someone who is flexible. This is a message board… no one here is putting alot of effort into anything. For me the ability to read between the lines and get something out of what is being discussed is something I admire.

Also I admire people who are themselves, who throw something out there that’s new, that’s interesting. I may think up crazy theories and stuff, so what if I’m wrong? It’s better than being right…

Not to turn this into a contest but some of my favorite posters include: Illativeminded, FM, Alex (she actually makes me laugh out loud), Gamer when he was here and of course the lovely Shyster.

sincerity, humility and open-mindedness

everything which is RARE to be found here.

Hey, don’t be close-minded about our potential Fab!

i’m gonna go with coherency. i GREATLY appreciate coherency.

i wish people would do me a big favor and dumb down their posts for me, because im just a real idiot and my feeble brain cannot comprehend the vocabulary and the amazing things happening on another level that i just am not a part of. i mean it really hurts my self esteem because i just wish that i was smart enough to be a bigger part of this site.

youre one of my favorites too, olgob!

my other favorite quality is not-stealing-my-answerness.

Creation Imperfect stole my answer, so now my favorite quality is not-stealing-my-answersness.
