What's a government?

I like to describe a government as a monopoly of people manipulating other people for their own selfish benefit all the while they put up the illusion that they are fighting for everyone else beyond themselves even when at many times simultaneously they don’t.

What is your definition of government?

Monopoly

1 : exclusive ownership through legal privilege, command of supply, or concerted action
2 : exclusive possession or control
3 : a commodity controlled by one party
4 : one that has a monopoly

Won’t we have to copy and paste most of the stuff from Carleas’ State thread, to answer that question?

But I forgot, the State is “everybody”, the government is only an in-group.

:unamused:

Well technically Carleas was talking about the “state” where for sake apart from semantics we are talking about the government entity itself.

I just don’t appreciate the difference, really.

Don’t they amount to the same thing?

I like to think of the state as what comprises to be around the government which encircles it where the government itself is a group of people who claims special authority.

( Shrugs.)

I suppose …

They still both need to be nuked, though. Lets not be discriminate here people!

We shall destroy the government, the people and all those other mindless herd-creatures who bow and lick spittle from the boots of authority - and live like barbarian kings in the desolate wilderness that results.

Hoo-ya!

(Yes, I am serious)

I’m game.

-Loco Bramista-

Joker,
I think your definition is more complicated than necessary. I would just say “a government as a monopoly of people manipulating other people” and leave it at that.

Who cares what their motivation might be?

I care about the motivation in what drives other people in that I can catch them more often caught up in a lie when they speak about words like truth and justice in front of a audience.

-Loco Bramista-

You can never know what motivates a person. The best you can do is observe actions.

The government is a small group of people who are more intelligent than everyone else, so they have taken control of a great deal of the power. They use it to get rich, and prevent other people from getting rich.

People in government are intelligent? When did this happen?

( P.S. People who operate the government are not intelligent, they just have alot of weapons at their disposal and are clever at bullshitting.)

-Loco Bramista-

clever at bullshitting = intelligent

-A government can also be empowered by the people.
-Many have done great things out of the selfish desire for adoration.
-What a government happens to be is not necessarily what government is generally. Tribal elders can be considered a government, and they are hardly as sinister as your suggested definition of government.

They can but not in state societies…

Like?

We are not talking about pre-civilized governments.

We are talking about state institutionalized governments, Carleas.

Is it intelligence or is it lying?

Either you’re talking about government generally (which seems to be the case based on the OP), or you’re talking about a Calvin-ball style definition of government which you can change to exclude anything that contradicts what you want it to say.

It takes more intelligence to tell a good lie than to tell the truth.

Government- Small group of people who claim special status of authority via a form of elitism or aristocracy who forms class stratifications of inequality in order to control the majority all the while they prey upon people’s dreams and hopes.

I shall await your rebuttal, Carleas.

I concede that it is possible.
