When Justice turns into… Revenge.

A 98-year old man suspected of conducting war crimes as a Nazi is under trial. [http://www.dw.de/nazi-war-crimes-suspect-laszlo-csatary-charged-in-hungary/a-16888584] Many juridical systems accept time lapse as a block to murder cases. Others do not. What is the limit beyond which Justice becomes… revenge?

Justice is revenge - a special kind of revenge, but revenge nonetheless. Even revenge serves a purpose.

i don’t think there should be any amnesty for crimes as heinous as those committed by Nazis. That’s a vengeful thing to say, but i think it holds for practical reasons if nothing else. People need to know that engaging in those sorts of acts will have consequences, no matter how long after the fact they are caught.

Beyond any juridical process “details”, I cannot see “justice” in a process to persecute someone for something he did 70 years ago. As I said, in many countries the law dictates that after some years any crime is written off. And this is not without reason. There are limitations to what you can pursue within a court and certainly chasing down a 98-year-old man for what he did when he was 20 is well beyond them…

The jews just need to keep people Reminded of the Shoah.

Oy Vey.

I have to agree. Such cases are ridiculous. If the man was a chronic criminal that would be one thing. But, this reeks.

So an arbitrary lapse of time between the comission of a crime and its prosecution exonerates the person who committed the crime? Just keep it hidden long enough and it’s as if it never happened.

That’s justice?

No and yes, if someone in their youth did something horrible then went and lived their lives contributing, being a decent human for the rest of their life, that should give a pass. To me that person knows what they did and has spent their life reliving their crime and have tried to make ammends. Ideally they should turn themselves in but, not all humans are that brave.
