Which member is the greatest; what do they have in common?

I nominate old Gobbo, Impenitnent, Bob, dan~, Bessy, Kriswest, Faust,

Why?

Because their judgments are grand. I suppose these people are the modern pre-socractics.

What do they have in common?

I can’t think of a reason, except they have avatars that changes every month.

Which one is the greatest?

Usually it is the founders/ the creator are the greatest of them all. I think that it was Bob. Thank you for creating the site. !!! It has given me super powers.

An open mind, and high CPU capabilities.

Imp and Someoneisathedoor

i though ben created the stie

I’d hate to single out just one. Even chosing a handful is difficult- what is the “greatest”? The one I agree with most? The one that causes me to stretch my mind the most? Maybe the best would be the one I most despise, for s/he is like a grain of sand that the pearl forms around…

Some of my nominations:

Bob- One of the very few Christians who’s intelligent, consistent and apparently nonjudgemental. He always recieves even the most sarcastic & disprespectul comments graceffully and responds to even the most dimwitted and meritless arguements as though they deserved a response. His level of erudition is tremendous, perhaps exceeded only by his patience. If good intentions and sincerity alone could convert me, Bob probably would.

Dunamis- Hotheaded and imperious at times, even petulent, it’s impossible to deny the superior education and intellect of Dunamis. His apparent grasp of the entire written body of philosophical works is staggering and his mind is incredibly keen. That he associates with the rabble here is amazing (albeit sporadic) but when he deigns to do so we’re all enlightened by it.

dan020350- Sometimes I think the childlike innocence of his questions does more to draw out ideas we don’t know we have than a hundred scholarly essays would! Truly he’s a wolf in sheeps clothing. Sometimes I have no damn idea what he’s talking about, and suspect he doesn’t either, but I’m surprised by how often it ends up making sense.

FutureMan
- A brilliant, drunken madman! He can’t often set down his forty long enough to post, but when he does it’s always worth reading.

Polemarchus
- Perhaps as learned as Dunamis, albeit a bit less venomous, Polemarchus wraps his insights in a gentle eloquence. Good natured and patient, seeing his name in a thread is always a good reason to start at the beginning and read til the end.

Time will tell dan, time will tell…

Wuahahahaha!!!

He did…

that mighta been a case of the short name switchup.

I wonder how many members will registered to vote?

I don’t think I have enough time to see, because my life is a short one.

That was sort of a joke, but you’re fairly young anyways…

My favorites:
Faust
detrop
Phaedrus
Imp
SIATD

Edit: I forgot sangrain, the sub. Thanks for reminding me, Faust.

I’ll chip in -

Dan~, because he is brilliant, and a swashbuckler

Yopele, because he is, at least, smarter than me, and knows a fact when he sees one, and because he possesses that rare virtue of clarity

Peter Kropotkin, because he is, if always wrongheaded in his politics, at least a true warrior and absolutely sincere in his views, neither of which is any small thing

Kriswest, because she understands that philosophy and common sense are not mutually exclusive

sangrain, because he understands both the limits and the possibilites of language, which is the greater part of philosophy

faust: I’ll chip in -

Peter Kropotkin, because he is, if always wrongheaded in his politics, at least a true warrior and absolutely sincere in his views, neither of which is any small thing

K: awwwwww, and I didn’t think you cared.
Oh, by the way, I will be vindicated by history.
You just wait and see. Just wait. No really,
I will be, honestly. Come on, wait a minute,
really wait, I will be vindicated by history.
If you just wait, you’ll see. PLeasssse wait.

Yeah, some good ones. I was thinking ‘active’ ILP’ers, although you are of course only here occasionally nowadays. I have a lot of admiration and respect for Jerry- whatever happened to him. Of those who’ve moved on I’ll admit a sneaking regard for Alderian, too. He and I often clashed and I didn’t agree with him that often, but he was tenacious and intelligent. Doc S was a muckraker but entertaining, and certainly he had the courage of his convictions. Not great per se but he enriched the boards.

Thirst, Tab (hmmm…aren’t those guys the same one? :stuck_out_tongue: ) and Uccisore are favorites of mine, too. Group hug?

No list of notables would be complete without mention of Gamer, although he’s apparently gone, or Detrop (although I’ve almost certainly misspelled or mispunctuated his nom de plume  ).

Faust is on the radar, too. He’s been moving up my list of solid critical thinkers at ILP.

Fags!

Seriously though, I like those guys, too.

I’m bias because I’ve made some really good friends here. But off the top of my head I would say Polemarchus, but that sucks. I really think everyone here totally kicks ass!!!

And Ben… I could never kiss ass as I can kiss his ass for creating such a tight community and not become hot-headed and use the power he has for evil!

Damn, Dunamis, you lived a long time in ILP. You have just broken the record for me to witness, that you have exceeded 7000 posts. Yikes :astonished:

He’s smart to boot. Phaedrus was right, sometimes you just wonder why people like him, Dunamis, (and Polemarchus) grace us with their presence. The aliens know we don’t deserve them. Seriously!
