Whites and the US Majority

I was quite amazed when I read this, and duplicates of the article can be found in a number of news sources, namely MSNBC, Yahoo, LA Times and others I don’t know of. Any thoughts on this? If whites no longer make up a majority of the US, are there bound to be political and cultural problems resulting in a redefining of what it means to be “American”? For example, an American, regardless of race, is easily identifiable by his/her American culture. Are the caucasians of any importance to the promotion of this uniform American culture (emo and cheerleading are not separate cultures)? Is it even a significant event in the history of America? Or can the American nation be said to be culturally uniform (i.e. MTV trends and the celebrity obsession), if not racially so? Will Obama be the stepping stone in the transition of power from the current caucasian majority to the future majority of the minorities?

I’d like to know what people, being of a variety of backgrounds on the Internet, and being able to express them freely without fear of some form of defamation, think of this.

Considering that there were about 150 Cado Indians on the lower Mississippi in 1800 who were greatly outnumbered by the Menommonee tribe in the western Great Lakes, numbering around 5000 at that time, leads me to ask “how many Pomo Indians were there in Northern California in relation to the number of Chinese immigrants in San Fransisco in 1850?”. And how would the Kickapoo tribe, numbering about 200 back then, “define what it means to be an American”?

I have to withhold any rant on this subject because I’m from Alabama. It’d be too easy to categorize me incorrectly.

Ah but I’d like to hear the side that defends the whites. “Caucasianism” has been fused with nazism. Well, even the case for nazism would be interesting to hear. People often cite black people as having all their racist stuff, and they do, but then again countries of predominantly white populations weren’t hurt by imperialism.
The most important question that comes up here for me is the immigration one. Is immigration a good thing? I think most would agree that it is, but when it happens in such large numbers, and when the country’s native majority is threatened by it, is it still a good thing? The whole idea of “good” and “bad” relies on the white majority being the majority. When that ceases, is the idea of “America” any less “American”?

I suppose, the question is: what defines America?

What defines a nation? Is it the political boundaries? Is Georgia any less of a country? Or is it the ethnic composition? Is Serbia in fact illegitimate?

The Crazy Horse comment, I remember my father telling me of a letter that a native American sent to the American president of his time warning him that the same would happen to the caucasian majority as had happened to the native Americans if they maintained their policies. Well, yup, turns out he was right.

So, let’s go beyond this, however. we’re talking about simply “European-decent white-skinned” or “white”? if it’s simply just those who have a white complexion, this number will still go well above 50%.
So, white’s will still be the largest majority, in every aspect other than the context of this article (they’re the minority in the future simply because it’s european-decent whites versus everyone else, instead of, versus african-decent, versus mexican-decent, etc.)
Now, for the concept of whether or not America will still be the same America when whites don’t make up for more than 50% of the nation (and again, at that point, no ethnic group will make that large of a stand)? Well, I suspect a large portion of the population at that point will be those of mixed-decent; as such, they will still be raised by those that hold European-decent belief systems, modified of course by time and experience differences.
Another thing to remember is that currently, the majority of white American beliefs is just stolen from other ethnic groups; i.e. musical preference of many Gen Y? rap, specifically african-american rap groups that come from social positions greatly different than their own.
So will America change because of increased ethnic diversity? I don’t see much of a change. The greatest change I would like to see is economic diversity (i.e. more “minorities” claiming a larger portion of the wealth, instead of the majority of the rich being white), because this is an event that would greatly change our country (presumably for the better). Most of culture in America is manipulated by those who are rich…
I see this as something that would still continue, and they would continue stealing other ethnic group’s cultures for profit, claiming it as their own. America won’t really change unless the balance of power is shifted… and no, Obama couldn’t manage that… the President is a lot weaker than most people think… congress is (and probably will for a while) mostly white… same with the Senate… and I don’t see that as changing too much anytime in the future.

The reason for the decline in Indian population is “intermarriage”. Indian tribes were not that numerous to begin with. Some of the smaller tribes were not much more than extended families. Some of the larger tribes like the Iroquis confedereration (consisting of 5, and later 6 tribes) numbered, maybe, 10 to 20 thousand at their height.

The USA is a nation of Immigrants. That’s why if you ask a third, fourth, fifth or sixth generation American what their ancestry is they’ll say “I’m German, Italian, French and part Indian”, or “I’m English, Irish, German and 1/4 Indian”, or 'I’m Norwegian, Polish, English, Russian and 1/8 Cherokee, or “my great great grandfather was a full blooded Potawatomi” which makes him or her 1/16 Indian, etc…

If people say I am white I laugh and say no, I am spotted, in the winters I tend to turn an amazing shade of blue and purple with all my spots showing, in the summer I get this lovely bright red hue on parts of my body to accent all the spots, very little of me is fully white… I just hold my freckled arms out to prove it. Then the argument goes into no You are considered white. You are of European descent. I tend to point out that the cradle of humanity is where folks are a tad darker and that we all started off the same. It gets pretty amusing from that point on. It amazes me how folks do not want to be part of some different group. They will go into full denial. :laughing:

Life is a circle, it is inevitable that we become one or just two colors. Thanks to technology we are no longer seperated by distance and time. Humans as one or two colors will not detract from individuality or seperating cultures. I think Schools that require uniforms proves that. Kids still find a way to seperate into groups, wealthy, geeky, Jock, poor, freaks etcetc, yet they all dress the same. Color of skin is just one minor part of what we are. Soon enough folks will wake up to that fact. 25 years ago down here in Mississippi you would not have seen white or black grandparents with black/white mixed grandkids, they would have ignored that child. Now you see loving proud grandparents with their mixed grandchild be the grandparent white or black or grandfather or grandmother. I see this as a good thing.
Smears is right though Alabama and Mississippi have the reputations of being bigoted. I do see changes though.

I like that no one really comments on the fact that the African American, taking a rise in social statuses at the moment finally, is lesser in population than the Hispanic population and isn’t projected to really grow much at all by comparison.
Meanwhile the Hispanic population is projected to move from 16% to 30%…um…89% increase?

Let’s see (I hate “pampy names” sigh):
African American: 15% increase
Hispanic American: 89% increase
Asian American: 73% increase
Caucasian American: -28% decrease

Spread that sheet out a few more years and the Hispanic American population, according to projections, will be equal and then higher than Caucasian American population by itself.

I thought it was interesting that the long standing voice of the African American to push for majority ownership of whatever is felt lacking…won’t happen.
It’ll slide from Caucasian American’s straight to Hispanic American’s.

But African Americans were never on pace to become a majority. Latinos could accomplish this by immigration, but Africans don’t immigrate here too much.

I’m still not quite sure what this phrase means.

What ever is the overall perspective of the African American majority community to be a shortcoming of being an African American in America’s various infrastructures, be it education, economics, occupational, cultural, etc…

I suppose I never really thought about immigration of African’s to America before…you make a good point.

Given the history of white people around the world how likely is it that they are just going to hand over their nations (or more importantly, their wealth and power) to other ethnic groups? Whites have always imported other races to work for them in the nations they created, nothing about that has changed.

With increasing immigration of non-whites into America and their expanding birthrate we should expect to see whites getting richer. When we examine the data that’s exactly what we find:

Since stories regarding ethnic demographics are created and proliferated by the white media I think they serve two purposes. On the one hand they frighten working class whites, encouraging them to breed and eventually re-stabilize the population ethnically, and on the other they provide empty succor to non-whites, giving them the false hope that they are having some kind of effect in the mind numbingly dull, subsistence level jobs they have enthusiastically sought after in the worlds richest nation, and which has, rather inexplicably, allowed them to have a visa :confused: (many of these immigrants come from Third World countries where having a large, extended family is itself seen as a sign of wealth).

in effect this has happened in the US already at least once before. The Irish were considered Other and didn’t really become white folk until Kennedy got elected president.

What’s happening in America is that there was a huge immigration of Mexicans, mainly, following NAFTA in 1994. That treaty changed the rules of the game for Mexican farmers, who basically couldn’t compete against subsidized US corn. They all moved to Urban areas - either inside Mexico or north to the US. However, from what I’ve read, we’ve seen the end of that wave of migration as the average birth per Mexican Woman has dropped from something like 6 kids a mom in 1965 to 2 kids a mom in 2000. Basically NAFTA and the Mexican Baby Boom coming-of-age coincided and pushed a shit load of people north. (Which is something that has always been the case. That border has ALWAYS been permeable.)

Anyway, most of the guestimates are that those Mexican families will have something like 3 kids a mom. White people have something like 1.5-2 kids a mom. (Pardon this is all off the top of my head. I can find the stats and source em if need be.) Black people babyize about the same as whites. After two generations, all the little babies will be mexi-babies

in my opinion, most of this is stupid as Mexicans, in America, turn into white people by the third generation. Just look at Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys. At base, what is profoundly threatened in my opinion is the dominance of White Protestants. Obama’s election did in fact end White Hegemony. Now, some people out in ILP land will object and say Obama is half white, therefore I am talking out of my ass and am a racist for not including his white half. Unfortunately, we live in a one-drop culture. You might be lily-white or pass for white, but in this country, if you have one drop of black blood, you’re black. That’s how it always had been. Now, I believe it to be changing. (In fact, Obama being mixed actually makes his election even more incredible. His very existence is predicated on an act that wasn’t even declared unconstitutional until 1967!) Anyway, back to the issue.

I do believe that White Protestant America is profoundly fucked. However, as a Catholic, I could care less. In fact, I think it’s about damn time. Serves 'em right for every smug Evangelical sonuvbitch that ever asked me “Yeah, but are you Christian?”

PS. there is the assumption here that most Mexicans are Catholic. Obviously, I view this issue not so much in terms of race, but in terms of religion. Try looking at it from a religious perspective. Strange things make more sense sometimes from the God-angle. The US is about to become a WHOLE lot more catholic
