I see their social bonds as quite complex, kin selection and altruism, but I understand what you mean and agree.

That depends on the religion.

If we are talking of Christianity then yes, they are that bad.

How bad depends on your mind set. How bad was the Dark Ages? How bad was the Inquisition? How bad were the Crusades?
