It seems pretty common to me that people stick with a screen name, or handle for a very long time. I have been using Gloam for a little over 3 years now.
Tell me somthing about your handle! (Why you chose it? Whats it mean?)
Gloam, it means twilight, or darkness. I used to play Warcraft III (a video game from Blizzard Entertainment) pretty religiously. My name was Gloam, becuase I played the Undead race, and I thought the name was sort of synonymous with evil, terror, etc. Which fits the Undead race like a glove.[/i]
It’s a character from the Merchant of Venice. Though he’s an old man… not a monkey.
Just sort of choose it… the underscore is there because most places wouldn’t let me put in a space. When I came here I just assumed I’d need an underscore so I put it there. I know otherwise now but I can’t change it
My handle is a pop culture reference to my real name, which is actually common enough to be its own protection. I’m pretty sure some, notably OG, figured it out, but were polite enough to demure from actually spelling it out.

Oops, I gotta quit using the back and forward button on this forum.
The reference is to Magnolia, William Macy’s character and myself share the same name. And considering the fact that I was on my highschool’s (state champion) scholars bowl team, this was a bit of a disconcerting parallel.
Actually, the media blitz for Magnolia had the characters saying their names and a soundbite. So when I was watching latenight TV and heard Mr. Macy say my name, I started to think I could be developing schizophrenia. Seriously. I was in the senior year of an academic psychology program, and I knew I was at the age at which many schizophrenics start showing symptoms. This is scary stuff. So I taped that channel every night during those hours until I found the commercial, and had proof that I hadn’t hallucinated my TV talking to me. I was very relieved.
Anyway, even though the character is somewhat flawed, I felt an instant connection with him. I, too, have a lot of love to give. So I adopted his nickname as my handle. He is also my Avatar.
My handle is easy for me to remember incase I am not on the computer for any great length of time. My name shortened and where I am from. (not live since MS. is east)
welcome to ILP gloam! i really prefer your avatar of a squirrel rather than a friggin zombie, which i abhor with all my soul.facial expression of hate
anyway,i dont think you put up a debut in the new members intro. section,so i’ll just welcome you here.
Drift… well this is a first ever ‘handle’. it is a charater i made up in a game universe which is superior to what you know as an RGP in every way. he looks cartoonish and ‘evil’.but only scooby-doo would actually be scared of something like that.his theme was to so on crazey miss-adventres eternally, never tireing out. his nature was pretty cartoonish.
drift as a charater never did act evil, though he did get as funny as hell at times…
i always went by ‘dandy man’ or similar before i came here.since all my other forum experiences were so bad,i was real cautious at first.
the main reason why i chose drift was cuz’ i had no speacial purpose to joining-just waste’in time, going on ‘missadventures’…
About the same answer as Tab. I’d been around the block a few times, had some vague notions, but no firm conclusions. I’m still comfortable with the name, although eventually I may join the bidding war for the Know-It-All name. Hmmmm, maybe I ought to ask Ben to reserve that one…
Be like water…water flows to the lowest ground, it never has conflict with obstacles, water is humble and gentle and cleansing. I wanted to learn to fly like water…
I have a different handle for every online place I visit/use. Something relevant to that place, usually. I’ve had to start writing them down now to avoid constantly forgetting…
Thank you, I chose the squirrel becuase I’de like to say I try to embody what squirrels are all about, being inquisitive, curious, and thoughtful for the future (Saving nuts!). But I risk a lot of people thinking I am a complete hippy for saying that.
I like the name Drift, I also like handles that have a good story behind them. Though I am also quite fond of just using my own name. My AIM name which I’ve had for about 4 years is my full name first and last.
well my one is kinda obvious i think, i chose it mainly because i like contradictions, specially when they are ironic, one of my favourites is in Shakespeare’s “King Lear” when Gloucester lost his sight and became blind, yet at that instant he also “saw” the truth of reality. I love Calvin and Hobbes comics so that explains the avatar
i had originally registered with “impleri” because that’s been my handle/website for a while. It comes from the Latin passive infinitive of “implere”. Roughly translated, it means “to be completed” and i saw it as an interesting metaphor for life.
Unfortunately, the activation email was lost (i got it some 10 days later), so i registered with this one. This is one that i used for a while and it is a theological reference with the concept of annihilationism (whereby “sinners” simply cease to exist as opposed to an eternity in fire and brimestone). i believe it originated with Karl Barth in his Dogmatik (i further speculate it was in volume 3, part 2).
