Why didn't the U.S. join Germany and Japan in WWII?

The world is “pretty much” ruled by the force of one nation - the US. I think we came out of it okay.

Great Britain was a much bigger trading partner with the US than was Germany. Still is.

For a long time, we didn’t want to enter the war at all. On either side.

Germany and Japan didn’t want us.

We had been imperialistic before WWII - try Googling “manifest destiny” and the “Munroe Doctrine”, for starters.

As to “world affairs” in general, try googling “World War I” and “league of nations”, just to kinda get up to speed.

Googling “Spanish-american War” might help on both counts.

japan and germany were allied and japan attacked us.

germany soon followed.

we should have listened to patton.

While I’m sure the numbers are inflated, the constant trend is far more intriguing. Unsurprisingly antisemitism remains alive and well in the US to this day.

In response to the OP, the US has always maintained very close ties with Britain and after George IV made it OK to like the French America has maintained a pretty close relationship with them as well. We also allied with France and the UK the last time and WWII was really just taking care of unfinished business left over from the first mess so it makes sense that we’d come in on the side of the Allied powers. I mean, we were sending supplies to Britain all throughout the war. Oh, and the Axis powers attacked us. That played a role as well.

^^ Allies in WWI don’t corresond to allies in WWII. Look at the Italians.

Also look into the Zimmerman Note. That didn’t do much to help American-German relations.

There were only two choices for America: stay out of the war, or join the Allies.

Oh come on staying out of a war?! The USA has too many toys to play with. Not joining in would go against the nature of boys and their toys. Politics be damned! We got the loudest Boom Booms and we will prove it! Our soldiers are the loud the proud and the brave!(Chill out, this is not an insult it is a compliment, Ever seen soldiers? They make more loud noise with their vocal chords than one would think possible)

Our country must join in wars or start them, its in the attitude and the abundance of really cool stuff for it.

True, both the Italians and the Japanese switched sides, but in the case of Italy that was because they were unsatisfied with what they got out of the settlement from the First World War. They got screwed over and were reacting to that. Plus there is that whole fascism connection between Italy and Germany.

But nothing dramatic had happened to America in terms of relations with the Allied powers after Nastiness #1 so it would seem to make sense that they would carry on their previous path.

Xunzian ,close the book, now answer with your heart and head, Its the bigger badder toys isn’t it? You know know boys worldwide just have to make explosions and a mess with their really cool boom boom toys. Politics just makes a fine excuse, just like the fourth of July or New years.

Post-WWII I’d agree with you completely. A lot of the fancier weapons developed by the Military-Industrial complex have around a ten-year shelf-life (I’m mostly talking about missiles here, vehicles like Humvees last forever). Now, the MI has to justify its existence and that huge budget it has, doesn’t it? That means it has to use these weapons. So you’ll note that there is a small conflict where those weapons get used every ten-years or so. During particularly peaceful stretches, those weapons get funneled to other governments to get used. But pre-WWII I’m not so sure that argument can be made, at least not as easily.

I wouldn’t say that it’s a desire to use their boom sticks, but a feeling of obligation, noblesse oblige. I think the reason for the superpowers’ worldwide military presences is because they have the capability to help. Whether they help or not is a completely different question, but I think that’s where the motivation lies, not in some new toy fetish.

That’s not to say they don’t get excited about the chance to use it when a conflict arises, but lets hope that doesn’t cloud their collective judgement.

Have you ever seen a General without a chest full of medals? they wear the medals Well the bars for the medals mostly, even on their casual uniforms not as much but, they do display quite a bit… What does that tell you? They are not in any way shape or form required to wear their medals… So why do they? Cloud judgement? Thank god its not the Generals that call for war. But, thank god they are the ones that lead it and not politicians Ok well that was a B.S. statement, we know who pulls the ropes.
