Why do people use foul language?

None of you will believe this, but I don’t, which is why I LOVE this site. My twenty-year old boys have never even heard me say “shit,” and I pride myself in that, but I have turned into a trashy-foul mouth woman here… is it stress? Or just b/c I have held it in for 25 years, or what?

%$#

I feel so much better now… :laughing: :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:

Bessy,

AMEN
:wink:

FUCKIN’ A :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:

translation: “indeed”

wait Bessy… aren’t you a 22 year old guy now, or have I just got it all confused :astonished:

I believe that word will express the level of mad or stress.
darn= oh well
crap= no big deal
damn= little anger
shit=fuck= temperary anger
FUCK=really mad
GOD FUCKING DAMNIT= warning warning avoid that person at all cost

Yes, one day Bessy is a jaded greybeard and the next day she is a bitter ingenue. It mutates by a whim… :sunglasses:

*Swearing is the vernacular of the young. It is accepted as standard chit-chat except, of course, in Utah.

Somebody once said that cursing is the feeble minds attempt to express itself. In my case, as I am not a feeble mind hopefully, I curse to establish a socio-linguistic relationship to the group I am addressing, to evoke a lilkeness and a comfort to/with them. Here at ILP the majority of the members are in their high teens and early twenties. I can communicate more effectively by adopting my style to fit an accepted type of language. Lingo and slang is very important as well. Deez kids will listen and perform better if I talk with them and not at them. Look at how popular I have become. Hell, I’m on the ILP front page, and my threads are read a thousand times in a couple days. I bet this has a lot to do with my character and my carefully designed “cool-ness,” which I am the epitome of. [blows finger-nails and swipes his sleeve] Its all in the talk, peoples.

Cursing can be used as a rhetorical device to effect what is said with an extreme emotion, obviously. It is also a demonstration of comfort and an expression of freedom. When one curses they feel good, they feel like they are breaking boundaries in custom and freeing language from its coventional restraints. The filthy mouth can be a work of art if it is done right. Cursing is a crucial element in human communication. It is the “rebel” of speech.

I would like to buy the world a coke, and keep it company.

I HAVE heard this and never agreed with it either… Now THIS is profound insight:

its not foul unless you believe it to be. for me persionally, it takes a little more then words to get rialed up.

I wonder about that, DC, because language is always learned within certain contexts. This might mean that while one can improvise are larger meaning for a curse word and its relationship to the communication in which it is present, it is indeed stamped with certain emotive certainties, like extreme expression. A curse word can be used offensively, defensively, or humorously. In any case it will indicate a certain life about the form of the statement in which it is used, projecting a sort of residue meaning to its emotional effect. I do think “foul” language is a pretty universal entity, while languages can be different yet expressing the same emotions.

“Fuck off you nit-wit” can mean a world of difference in even the slightest contextual circumstances.

Yes, but I am still hanging on detrop’s “work of art.” It brings to mind vulgarity becoming fine poetry in…

“Exhibit A: One loutish headstrong penis, a barbarous cuntvore without a flyspeck of decency in him. The capscillion of all rapscallions. A scurvy, vermiform scug with a serpentine twinkle in his solitary eye. An orgulous Turk who strikes in the dark vaults of flesh like a penile thunderbolt. A greedy cur seeking shadows, slick crevices, tuna fish ecstacy, and sleep.”

-Richard Dooling-

I think I need a cigarette now… :sunglasses:

A curse is an uninhibited movement. It is passion breaking through all self-imposed limitations. And passion itself is unrefined, vulgar, and gross. It is life, naked and raw, unperfumed, unadorned, and undisguised. This is life as civilizations tries desperately never to see it. The civilized who dine in fine restaurants and never give a moment’s though to the slaughter it took to prepare their sumptuous meals. Those who deny the ugly underbelly that makes all living possible.

A curse has the potential to break through pretensions. Our own and those of others.

Ah yes, freedom of expression oh how i love it.
People swear because there are no other words to describe their outrage.

Because they don’t know how to say FUCKYOURMAMA in a polite manner. In my fucking case though, I just couldn’t give a shagging toss.

I had quite a potty mouth as a young teen which I managed to clean up–that is, until I got my car and entered the world of traffic jams. Now let me tell you, it feels FUCKING good to curse these bastereds out (even though I try very hard to play the stoic). Unless you know what it’s like to drive in New York City with these INSANE cab drivers and Assholes, I do not think one can fully appreciate the theraputic benifits of: That Mother Fucking, Cocksucking, Piece of Ass Licking, Shit!

Feeling better these days man?

One empty day at a time…

I had to put this up after reading your post. :laughing: I hope everyone becomes a fan after reading this, Carlin deserves more fans.

George Carlin’s Seven Dirty Words

There are some people that aren’t into all the words. There are some people who would have you not use certain words. Yeah, there are 400,000 words in the English language, and there are seven of them that you can’t say on television. What a ratio that is. 399,993 to seven. They must really be bad. They’d have to be outrageous, to be separated from a group that large. All of you over here, you seven. Bad words. That’s what they told us they were, remember? ‘That’s a bad word.’ ‘Awwww.’ There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad Intentions.

And words, you know the seven don’t you? Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, huh? Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that will infect your soul, curve your spine and keep the country from winning the war.

Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, wow. Tits doesn’t even belong on the list, you know. It’s such a friendly sounding word. It sounds like a nickname. ‘Hey, Tits, come here. Tits, meet Toots, Toots, Tits, Tits, Toots.’ It sounds like a snack doesn’t it? Yes, I know, it is, right. But I don’t mean the sexist snack, I mean, New Nabisco Tits. The new Cheese Tits, and Corn Tits and Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits Onion Tits, Tater Tits, Yeah. Betcha can’t eat just one. That’s true I usually switch off . But I mean that word does not belong on the list.

Actually, none of the words belong on the list, but you can understand why some of them are there. I am not completely insensitive to people’s feelings. You know, I can dig why some of those words got on the list…like cocksucker and motherfucker. Those are…those are heavy-weight words. There’s a lot going on there, man. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling. They’re just busy words. There’s a lot of syllables to contend with. And those K’s. Those are aggressive sounds, they jump out at you. CocksuckerMotherfuckerCocksucker. It’s like an assault, on you. So I can dig that.

And we mentioned shit earlier, of course. Two of the other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go together of course. But forget about that. A little accidental humor there. Piss and Cunt. The reason Piss and Cunt are on the list is that a long time ago certain ladies said ‘Those are the two I am not going to say. I don’t mind Fuck and Shit, but P and C are out. P and C are out.’ Which led to such stupid sentences as ‘OK, you fuckers, I am going to tinkle now.’

And of course the word Fuck. The word Fuck, I don’t really…well, this is some more accidental humor, but I don’t really want to get into that now. Because I think it takes too long. But I do mean that. I mean, I think the word fuck is an important word. It’s the beginning of life, and, yet it’s a word we use to hurt one other, quite often. And uh, people much wiser than I have said, I’d rather have my son watch a film with two people making love than two people trying to kill one other. And I of course agree. I wish I know who said it first, and I agree with that. But I would like to take it a step further. I would like to substitute the word fuck, for the word kill in all those movie cliches we grew up with. ‘Okay Sheriff, we’re gonna fuck ya now. But we’re gonna fuck ya slow.’ So maybe next year I’ll have a whole fuckin’ rap on that word. I hope so.

Uh, there are two-way words, but those are the seven you can never say on television. Under any circumstances you just can not say them ever, ever ever, not even clinically. You can not weave them in the panel with Doc and Ed and Johnny, I mean it’s just impossible, forget those seven, they’re out.

But, there are some two-way words. There are double-meaning words. Remember the ones your giggled at in sixth grade? ‘And the cock crowed three times.’‘Hey, the cock the cock crowed three times. It’s in the bible.’ There are some Two-way words, like it’s okay for Kirk Goudy(sp?) to say ‘Roberto Clemente has two balls on him.’ But he can’t say, ‘I think he hurt his balls on that play Tony, don’t you? He’s holding them. He must have hurt them by God.’ And the other two-way word that goes with that one is prick. It’s okay if it happens to your finger. Yes, you can prick your finger, but don’t finger your prick. No, no. :laughing:

I’ve always maintained that, for me, english was a second language. Potty mouth was my native tongue. Profanity was camoflage. As a school kid I quickly learned that using the good King’s english was an excellent way to get your ass kicked. Almost as bad as suggesting that you couldn’t eat Pi. Like all the dippy-doo mannerisms you HAVE to adopt as a teenager, inserting fuck into every sentence was just as important as smoking, drinking, and all the other BS games.

Over time, I managed to get control of potty mouth (a little control) but its’ still there. I agree that it can be an ‘art form’. I use it much as a condiment, and ocasionally as a baseball bat. Depends on what I had for lunch.
