What’s the psychology behind this and is this emotional feeling that they have true ?
Because what they really wanna do is watch people go surfing rather than go surfing themselves.
Life is hard and painful. If they can find a way to feel good about themselves (I like in X so I am special) people will. Then it’s just deduction to people not from someplace great are worse, unless they can check off some other box to make up for their living in a less special place. So, assume people will try to find a way to feel good about themselves - though they can even do the opposite at the same time - and whatever they come upon will then put people on the outside.

Apparently something about birds of a feather, or not forgetting where you came from, or certain cultures turning out certain kinds of character & what not…which bad company ruins.
