Besides the obvious fact of helping maintain homeostasis, why do humans wear clothes? is it because we are told by others that our genitals are “taboo” and can’t be seen?
Also why do some let something like the clothes establish their mood? for example “wow, i look like crap, i can’t go out”
As someone who is, by disposition, a nudist, I would say the best reason for clothes in modern society is ritual. As you said, there are very solid historical reasons for our having worn clothes, so to a certain extent it falls into the same category as “animal intestines stuffed with rotting meat” – it was necessary at one point and from necessity a whole range of flavor was discovered that people eventually decided was “good”. But, yes, it has evolved beyond necessity. Think about how much you can tell from a person based on the clothes they wear: their class, their standing withing said class, how they self-identify, ect. It is an easy means that allows for direct transmission of a huge volume of data immediately upon sight. And that is, of course, the point of ritual: to transmit information immediately and accurately.
yea, the above is right but, mostly we wear clothes because we have thin skins and no fur. Without clothes many of us would either be popcicles cooked by the sun or eaten alive by noxious insects. There really are not too many places where you can go naked year round. Every where I have lived clothes were a much needed survival tool. From the Arizona desert to the swamps here in Miss. we have some of the thinnest skins in the animal kingdom, I think the only ones that might have thinner skins are those that live below ground for the most part. Even then most still have fur. We lost our fur before we got clothes I believe, someone may know better. Vanity came after ,but really its no different then any animal that grooms themselves. We just are a bit fancier. Animals groom themselves for health and sexual appearance. So do we.
Yes he is good. I do not like the thought of standing in a crowd of naked people though. EEEEEEEWWWWWW, grosss, body juices and stuff. The nakednes does not bother me, its the smells and the fluids that get gross, then they touch you, hundreds of strangers touching you, disease, smells, icky feeling body fluids… No thanks, people keep your clothes on in crowds please, its less gross. :-&
Lenado DaVinci thought the human genetalia are ugly. A hose and a hole? Geeze, he might be right. But the whole package–ahh, that’s a different story. Sexual intensity seems to occur from imagination of what is hidden. Striptease, both male and female, depend on total nudity as the final enchilada (sic). What we don’t see arouses us.
I wear clothes to keep warm. Unlike my cat, I didn’t come equipped with a garment that changes according to the weather. It’s the use of clothes as a status symbol that disturbs me. Also I’d be arrested without them.
I think most people in the world look better with their clothes on. If everyone looked like a pro-basketball player or a swimsuit model, then maybe the case for nudism would be a little stronger. As it is, i prefer the selectivity of choosing which people can go naked around me.
In most cases we wear clothes to be cool, and to not be cold. And genitals are not taboo, but tabooty. But if bumpin the uglies is not yur thing, but talking about it is, then you can speed dial 1-900, and be bad to the phone.
My cat does not know he is naked. He is not ashamed. So–what interests me is whether or not there are any studies about children raised as nudists, studies that find shame to be a social imposition on a natural phenomenon.
You all run around nude if you want to won’t bother me a bit, I prefer protecting my delicate thin skin as much as possible. besides its summer, certain surfaces are not meant to be sat on with flesh exposed.
Nudity is not a natural phenomenon. We do have as much hair as chimps, but it is finer. It is an adaptation, but as an adaptation we have to admit of the influence of society. Everytime you hear some girl say :Ooooh, gross, on seeing a man covered with dark body hair, you get the sense of how deliberate has been our march from animal nature. Yet; part of our human nature is the ability to concieve of hair on animals and use that form to create clothing for humans, and it serves the same natural purpose as nakedness, which helps to ward of infestations of parasites, -and hair, which protects the body from injury. Surely, because we are seeming hairless, our bodies are capable of sending powerful visual messages, which may have served a survival purpose at one time. For a very long time we have found it more essential to deny our sexuality and our desires so we can accomplish more. But, the sexuality asserts itself in the clothing people wear and their choice of fashion, so that curiosity is enhanced, and the imagination is set on fire.
