Why do YOU defend your faith?

Well?

To all you believers and non-believers… why do you continue this war of ideas?

I mean… why come here and activly seek to argue for or against a belief in a supernatural god?

What is it you hope to achieve?

I’m not asking about why one ought to do so… But why YOU do so… Maybe those are the same… maybe not…

Personally, I come here to learn about the religious mind… the reasoning and the arguments that go into maintaining a belief in a god, and I’m very interrested in how the theist defends himself against criticism… I also have a vague notion of humility in the thought that perhaps i’m missing something and maybe there might be something to this god business… though, I have yet to see what that might be… Also, I suppose that, in some very remote and naive part of me, I harbor a faint hope to perhaps convert someone into rationality… but that’s wishful thinking on my part.

How about YOU?

Well, I like learning about how other people think. And I have strong opinions and like the odd argument. It’s a fun way to pass some time.

I like to see where cliches lead. Like, you see something that every atheist says, and you question it in some way that you haven’t seen it questioned before, just to see what happens, what’s behind the words.

My hope is to convert you Mad Man P. from atheism to Christianity and all the other non-believers. You guys are missing out on sermons that’ll get you thinking in ways you’ve never dreamed. Bingo nights are pretty cool too. As are old men in long oversized garments and big pointy hats. They can make the mass last as long as lent season, but they’re good moral god men who can absolve you of your sins Mad Man P. so don’t think too much of length, focus on their message of god. This is truly the golden ticket to heaven. I’m surprised that not everyone shows up because they should know by now that they will be in hell if they don’t keep holy the sabbath. Guess me and Lennard are the only true believers at my church. It’s a shame more don’t show up. You’re lucky Mad Man P. cuz i have an empty seat next to me at lutheran’s church open every sunday. I’d like to see you there and i’m sure my priest would too. He’s got these special wafers he gives out for newcomers…

Plain and simple. We don’t KNOW everything yet, and see the universe and all in it but from the tiniest perspective. I’m not concerned with those who can say they don’t know. Giving up knowing is the beginning of knowing… It is the knowers, seeking the cradle to grave and beyond certainty within their closed systems that interests me… I have nothing to defend, but questioning those who do has its moments. They say that a mind is a terrible thing to waste… but religion is undoubtably the biggest waste of all.

People often defend their faith because they see it being a part of them. Yet, even if their faith holds solid ground they wish to test out the ground of others in accordance with their “island”. Perhaps it is a subconscious pursuit to indulge ones ego, or for some a simple past time.

I don’t quite see it… how does it indulge the ego?

I might have bought it if you had said something to the effect of social belonging or acceptemce… but ego?

Simple, one if set in one’s way; they can simply imply self-righteousness. They come to the arena believing they have already won and don’t really seek the battle. We have seen some who have done this on many sides of the table over the years on the forum.

Example: I know Zeus is the greatest of Gods so I know you are wrong.

One’s ego is satisfying the faith, by placing it higher than any others. One could enter a battleground feeling as though Zeus is the end all and you see that. Therefore, you are the superior being. Hence, by being the superior being others are below you with their sub par religions.

lol Thats what i thought… athiests go on religous forums to try and preach and convert thiests to their faith in the doctrine that there is no god. I think theists are too intelligent to fall for such irrational claims.

If you get rid of the labels atheist and theist and so forth, you’ll find that some people are just rational and other people are silly. Discovering which you are takes courage and critical thinking which can lead to insight. Usually this insightful way of pointing out the silliness can be quite fun and is in fact a recreation of mine. There are those who wish to hide the silliness of things, those are the true charlatans.
