Yes, learning helps you survive, but philosophy is not about survival, it is something else. The first philosophers in human history were not slaves, they were free men who had solved their economic problems and had plenty of time to investigate non-survival issues and ask questions about scope of life, operation of cosmos, source of morality etc.
