i’m always checking to see if she’d sayed anything in reply. but it’s like checking lotto tickets. no winners. SIATD,did you really say in the past that she actually said a factual statment before? i’ve not been at ILP for a year.
she should’ve called herself the riddler or something. wait. even riddler off batman said more factual statements than PG did! a mystery.
i see now why gobbo thought she may be a social test or a statistic collecter or something…
i asked a question.i didnt diss you. but you said a reply sorta.thanks though! i mean, you dont seem to speak your mind, just ask questions,so this was different.
Its not what you did, its what you didnt do. All you ever do is ask questions and nothing more. Its damn annoying that you must littler the forum with constant questions. Ask a question and give your own answer, dont just expect people to do all the thinking for you. If you cant be bothered to put down your own ideas and opinions then this is not the right place for you.
You asked questions about which you clearly didn’t give a toss. Asking questions is fine if you want to kick off a discussion but you can’t be bothered to even find out about a topic before asking questions about it because you want everyone else to do the work for you.
Some advice - the next time a question like ‘why is okay for men to cheat but not for women?’ or some other similarly vacuous twaddle pops into your head and you think about starting a new thread, try looking up what some other people have said about it first and presenting your post in a different manner. My suggestion would be:
On this issue (whatever the question is) person X has commented thusly “(insert opinion of commentator)” whereas person Y has commented “(insert different opinion)”. I’ve been thinking about this and I think that person Y is correct because (insert argument here).
When you do this you’ll find people will be a lot more accomodating and willing to converse with you…
The difference between Socrates and PG is that Socrates didnt just ask questions then bugger off for a vanilla latte. Socrates used questioning as a method to help people understand his theories. Ive tried using the socratic method but I find a lot of people tend to wonder off from what im trying to get them to understand.
Heh, you aint kiddin’ there. I almost laugh at where my conversations end up from time to time. The Socratic method is great in theory! …but people just talk too damn much thesedays, especially woman!
I think it’s like driving past a really bad accident on the highway. You don’t want to look, but can’t help it.
I have a tendency to open all the new posts in tabs, so when I’m done with one, I move along. I’ve been taken in by too many of her posts this way in the past.
No forum is ever “normal” if there is not at least one “fly” hanging around. Now, when I compare her to a fly, I honestly mean here no unkindness or disrespect.
A fly is a little insect that hovers around you when you are just trying to enjoy a peacefull picnic. The fly won’t go away, no matter how much you swat at it.
Similarly, PhilosophyGirl seems to enjoy hovering around in the Mundane Babble. Perhaps this is actually a good thing, given that it keeps all of here rather mundane topics in the correct board. In addition, she seems to be immune to the comments made about her by the other members. She just won’t go away.
I do suppose this could explain why men tend to make up the majority of the active membership here (although there are several very, very philosophical female posters who are active here) at ILP.
I disagree with all of you. All questions in life are pertinent and interesting. Is her virginity important to me? Not really, but maybe she needed to ask, which makes it pertinent to her thus pertinent to others like her. I tire of your constant judgement of what philosophy is or isn’t. The philosophy of a young inexperienced girl could turn the head of another - her unique perspective shedding light on something or someone.
I learn from everything and everyone.
If you are well read, does that give you wisdom? If you are old, are you necessarily enlightened? If you are young and reaching out with questions, does it make you stupid and worth ignoring? No, I don’t think it does. See beyond just the simplicity of her questions to your own answers and reserve your irrational judgement for your own issues of insecurity.
Plus, she is doing my makeup for the ILP calendar now, so don’t mess with my girl.
I dont think a string of irrelivant questions concerning such tacky issues constitutes for philosophy. Everyone may have their own idea of what philosophy is, but no one is complaining about the questions per say, we are complaing about the lack of content in PG’s posts. Asking questions alone is not enough, its lazy and disrespectful.
“Science is what you know. Philosophy is what you don’t know.”
Bertrand Russell
No question is disrespectful, but many answers here seem to be. If you don’t like the questions find another thread. Look back. Some of the craziest questions have brought on some great discussions. Tangents. I am all about the wild and wooly tangents.
“Science is what you know. Philosophy is what you don’t know.” -Bertrand Russell
In contention with Bertrand’s preference for science:
Science is that area of culture where we find uncontroversial agreement.
Philosophy is that area of culture where we cannot find uncontroversial agreement.
Claiming that water is Hydrogen Dioxide, is just an uncontroversial claim.
