The answer is, just like all such answers pertaining to right and wrong in society, simply because “They” say so.

Actually as you know, you do more than that. You make statements about what is the case. And, yes, why are you asking for people’s permission and approval?

Why is it wrong? Well as Darklordabc pointed out women numeriacly are considered more valuable, men are the Warriors of the species so to lose them to violence while not welcome is accepted, this extends to any for of violence as to tough it out or succeed in a violent clash is seen as a manly virtue.
Because of that any type of violence by men against women is seen as unacceptable, because the woman likely either has kin or male admirers that will not accept to see her harmed, also the ability to ptoect your kin or woman is seen as another virtue in human society.
So in a very basic way, it’s wrong because doing the opposite, protecting them, is seen as good.
If in the future humanity as a whole (for one reason or another) change this paradigm, then perhaps this will change. But I don’t see that happening any time so (or perhaps not at all).
Why though ? If you’re convinced that morality is subjective, that right and wrong don’t exist, why are you posing ethical questions, at all ?
Forget about “The They”. What do you feel? Is it right or wrong to hit a woman? What do you yourself feel and think about this? If all morality is subjective, than you yourself must define your own morality. So what is your morality? Dig deep into yourself and ask those questions. What the hell does it matter what I or anyone else thinks if all morality is subjective? You’re the subject! What do you feel about this?

It may be stemming, for some, from chivalrous attitudes. Others my think it is wrong to turn to violence when there are other options, regardless. Some may think that using violence with anyone who is weaker when there are other options is cowardly and since women tend to be weaker than men in fight terms, it’s a fairly decent rule. Sort of like it’s wrong to hit old people or beat up a child. Some just simply dislike the idea of hitting someone weaker and use moral terms for their tastes and dislikes.
Society cannot hold a ḿorality, only people can. As far as choosing any morality if you are taking a relativist position and assuming that everyone agrees with moral relativism, you are incorrect.
Its wrong to hit a woman because they bleed for 5 days straight, and that is a lot of blood, without dying.
