I just finished my general in college and i’m deciding whether or not I should major in philosophy or not. I hate math and science, but i’m in love with philosophy.
Is it worth doing a major in? Is there any career opportunities for me? And if so, what are they?
I have no where else I can ask this question and I love this forum, so thanks to anyone who can answer this out and help me!
Yes, I almost went into law and so I took political science courses that were heavy in philosophy.
If you decide to go into law and live in the US then check out the LSAT exam that gets you into law school after the BA. The test contains difficult logic puzzles, unless you are into that. It needs to be understood or else you will never get into school.
I would suggest business or a computer science degree. Meanwhile, you can have a great hobby reading and learning about philosophy. Also, you can take the electives in Philo or whatever.
You should be asking yourself, “what are my priorities?”
Do you love philosophy enough to continue pursuing it – even if it perhaps limits your ability to get a better job?
How important really is philosophy to you? It all depends on how you prioritize your interests and passion.
Outside of teaching, perhaps, I’m not really aware of any job that would actually require a philosophy-major. But should you really be determining your major based soley on your future career?
eh. I want to stray away from math and science, but web design was a choice and I hear web design pays very well
oh and philosophy is very important to me, but I want to survive later in life and be able to support my family and honestly have lots of money. but the only thing i’m interested in school is philosophy, so I simply just don’t know what to do.
I have been in liberal arts for almost twenty years. It is almost impossible to make a normal living. It is my opinion that much of it is for what I call “housewives” with an income set accordingly. There are a huge number of women in liberal arts jobs and mean that I have known have a husband that works in business, and makes a lot of money. It’s not the rule, but something that I’ve noticed.
Anyway, the country does not operate on liberal arts principles, but on business principles. If you oppose them you will pay this discomfort.
My wife is a graphic designer and she makes about 100K per year. I have a doctorate in psychology with three masters degrees and make a fraction of that.
You also need to see what it is that lawyers do before you decide. Some go to court as you see on TV, but many are people that file papers all day and are corporate type lawyers.
Yes, of course lawyers do lots of paperwork but their main focus is advising people, they are advisors. But doesnt every job have tons of paperwork, especially business.
and my real name thank you for that site, thats interesting that business is good for philosophy majors. I wonder if big companies actually hire philosophy majors?? hmm…
