In a recent discussion I stated that in the interests of furthering the new global economy, both the United States Constitution as well the exclusive claims of the New Testament are out-dated documents and should be shelved.
Having thus blasphemed against the two most holy sacraments of the American psyche, two doughty defenders of the Flag and the Bible, immediately jumped to their defense and demanded further explanation.
I pointed out that the two documents contradicted each other. The first stated that all Gods are permissible, and the other definitely not. It made no sense for a powerful people to have things both ways, as it only encouraged conflict of interests. That brief explanation was ignored. Both defenders simply stuck to their guns and reiterated the sanctimony of both Bible and Constitution.
In the interests of communal understanding, further explanation is obviously necessary - with some feint hope that the rational supplied will seep out of this tiny valley into the larger national consciousness.
Why the New Testament is redundant as it stands.
When the 1st Amendment was introduced in 1791, Thomas Jefferson realized right away that it presented a serious conflict of interests between Church and State. His solution was to re-write the New Testament and remove all supernatural claims to Jesus’ life.
If America had adopted the Jefferson Bible, this country would be a vastly different place today. For starters, the divisive gulf between the religious right and the liberal left, which stalls Congress on so many other issues, would not exist. We would have a nation working smoothly domestically as well as internationally. Its people would be in harmony with both its political ideology and its religious belief in the essential core of Christ’s teaching.
Actually practicing the doctrine of “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” instead of labeling them as the “Axis of Evil”, would be the essential testimonial required for being a true Christian – not just reciting the Nicosian creed as a ticket past the Pearly Gates after bombing your neighbor.
Why the Constitution is redundant as it stands.
Before the United States wrote and ratified the Constitution, most nations were ruled by royal decree. It was a commoner’s belief, supported and upheld by the Church, that royal birth was by Divine design. Thus, disloyalty to the crown was the same as disloyalty to God Almighty.
This belief in royal divinity had been encouraged in Europe throughout the centuries after the fall of Rome. The unity of thousands of clans was maintained via strict loyalty to the Crown. The oath of obedience to the King was essential during that period, for the building of early national structures.
Eventually, with the crowding of Europe and expansion into the colonies, a New Age of human development began. The old system of kingly power had to be dismantled. Thomas Paine’s pamphlet: “Common Sense” helped to break the religious spell that royalty held over the commoner,s mind.
Old power never goes easy, so bloody revolution had to follow before Republics could be formed. Conservatives fighting to preserve the power of the crown, genuinely believed that God was on their side. Thus the Constitution was a vital element in formulating the new rules for governing a freed people.
In essence, the Constitution represented a new form of consciousness. It allowed the common man realize that he was just as divinely appointed to life as any king and had just as much right to govern himself in the pursuit of happiness. That doughty document has served over the past three centuries to build America into a world power.
But once again, over-crowding of human populations, and the impact that has on the global environment, is forcing the whole of mankind to look for a new form of government. The old rules will not work in this next New Age. An entire planet has to be managed as a single entity. Bad management in one sphere affects us all.
As always, conservatives are arguing against mass change, and liberals are urging for it. Those fighting to preserve the status quo genuinely believe that God is on their side. Their anti-argument, that a Central Mind will control all of us is silly. We are now vastly too educated for such infantile domination. The fact is that we are all capable of governing ourselves.
We do not need kings, or congresses to make decisions for us. This next New Age represents an evolved form of consciousness – a greater degree of individual freedom than we have ever had before Once we see ourselves as custodians of this wonderful planet and not owners of it, that new consciousness will do away with police and armies and central government. A more mature conscientiousness will make each one of us self-disciplined human beings.
In this new atmosphere, written Constitutions and the endless legislation of new laws and vast armies of administrators makes no sense.
As always, old power does not abdicate without a fight. Blood must flow. History will show that 9/11 was the first blow of the global revolution.
