Prolonged use may result in significant loss of bone density. The FDA suggests that Depo-Provera should only be used as a long-term birth control method (longer than 2 years) if other birth control methods are inadequate.
It also makes you fat…it made me gain 35 pounds, without any other lifestyle changes.I was actually well into the overweight range for the first time in my life. I had to buy all new clothes (new jackets for God’s sake). I’ve lost the 35 pounds, but it took over 6 months after being off Depo.
If you are a woman who is considering what type of birth control method to use, know all the facts. They didn’t know about the bone density thing when I first went on it, but my grandmother had severe osteoporosis and died from a broken hip. I spent all of my 20’s doing weight training to build my bone density. It pisses me off that I lost part of that hard work because of what a doctor didn’t know about what they were injecting into my body.
Most (if not all. I’m unaware of any that don’t) hormone-based methods of birth control lead to weight gain and can lead to bone density loss, as well as increased risk of clotting. I thought this was pretty common knowledge. I guess it’s a question of where you place your priorities.
Most ladies I’ve known have been big believers in not getting preggers and ruining their lives.
Depo is what they give to men to make them look like women. It’s THE strongest stuff.
Shyster any doctor should know the many potential side effects to this stuff. It’s been my experience that they give it to women that express a kind of sexual irresponsibility or demonstrative lack of interest in pregnancy coupled with a lack of interest in the routine of taking meds. So, to sum up, ladies, and concerned gentleman, watch what you tell the doctor.
I went to planned parenthood and based part of my decision on being a thirty-something smoker (after going through a one hour demo of all the options with a nurse). I’m also allergic to spermicides, so that rules out a few things. They the easiest, safest, most effective form of birth control…much safer than the pill…estrogen-free…three easy shots a year…no risk of forgetting a pill…they told me nothing about possible bone density loss. The knew about about the history of osteoporosis in my family. I don’t want to run the risk of pregnancy…just because I’m monogamous and not poor doesn’t mean I should start popping out kids. I have nieces and nephews to spoil/live my dreams vicariously through(ha) My GP put me on a very low dose birth control pill instead. He said “What, you’re healthy…a little bit of estrogen is better than an overdose of progesterone.”
He’s right.
If you can’t figure out the audience to whom this next bit is directed at, you’re either really insecure about your sterling character or .
It’s really easy for someone to wax philosophical about birth control when they aren’t the ones who will bear the greatest responsibility for the child in 80% of births. You can always piss off, leave the country,…we cannot separate ourselves from the responsibility. We never have that option…oh, sure, we can get easy abortions if accidents happen…we can have cut out what would, in all probability, have been a human being with half our genes and our child…great option.
Hey, there are a lot of things that really stink about being female and don’t you be pointing a finger when you cannot fully understand what those things are…you impudent little shiite. Have you seen a dowager’s hump or a hip replacement? You get 2 hip joints replaced, and you can never cross your legs again…never mind the pain.
It’s only in totally monogamous relationships that not using condoms or condom breakage/slippage is even a factor. It’s more likely to happen if you’re having sex with someone you’re living with…because you have sex more often, and usually this is a monogamy situation.
