Who does that? Who does all those little necessary jobs that no one want’s to talk about?
“So, what do you do for a living?” “Well, I run the machine that put’s the little stick in the end of a tampon. I work in a tampon factory.”
Not exactly great cocktail party conversation, and a really lousy pick-up line.
How do people get these jobs? Was it a career move? Did they piss somebody off? What do they tell their children? How do they respond to the spouse’s question, “What did you do at work today, honey?”
What would they think of ILP and the sagacious pondering and postulating?
There are all kinds of these necessary, but not-talked-about jobs out there. Who makes the pretty printed designs on the toilet paper? Any chance they’ll receive an excellence of design award?
Terratologist. Bailiff. Inheritance (death) tax officer. Human Guinea-pig. Life-class model (less paunchy then). Artist (unexhibited ). Teacher… Respectability at last…
How can you say you were unexhibited if you were a life class model? That’s being an exhibitionist isn’t it? And what about what you did at the Christmas party? Unexhibited, indeed!
I think you guys are all snobs. Every one of those people could be and probably are proud of their jobs.
Check out Studs Terkel’s work on this mater.
But as for the people who do these jobs, I think it’s not so much of the fact they -really- want to be a laxative tester, but once they get stuck with it, the body adapts, you learn to find fun by doing your job in a unique or skillfull way, as well alot of this adaptation is based on inter-worker social play. There could a be woman at the tampon factory who is smoking hot and scheduled to inherit the tampax corporation when she turns 25.
In my experience (granted that hasn’t been all -that- long) I have never seen a worker who both a) hated his job and wanted you to know the only thing keeping him from strangling you on the spot was his paycheque. and b) was very very, visably bad at his job.
You can get one, but not the other unless you delve pretty deep into the special situation pool. At least I think, let me know
