I would say wrote as well, because I believe that “nut” would cause the conversation to end too soon. The word “wrote” might be stimulating.

He or she would think you’re funny. Even the idols need some play.

As for the sentience issue, I would have to say that it would depend on the point of view - ours or the nut.
