In 1938 the Vicar of Hucknall (Torkard), the Rev.Canon T.G. Barber, MA., received permission from the Home Office and from the surviving Lord Byron, then the Vicar of Thrumpton, Nottinghamshire, to have the poet’s tomb opened in order to make a record of contents. This was thought necessary because of persistent rumours which had been circulating for some years to the effect that Lord Byron’s body was not in his coffin and that his heart had been interred in Greece.
To avoid attracting sightseers, the arrangements for inspecting the vault were carried out in the utmost secrecy. On the evening of 15th June, in the prescence of a small number of onlookers which included the churchwardens and Mr. Seymour Cocks, M.P., Canon Barber proceeded to open the Byron vault.
