what do europeans learn about american history. im just curious.
More than the average American does.
Hm…from what I recall we learned regarding American History and Infulence about Fordism, the principles of Mass Production Process and Mass Media, as well as, obviously, the Power of Capitalism, and the overwhelming Faith and Devotion to the word and reality, Profit! O and the Civil War and The Constitution and your part in the Declaration of Human Rights…
As for specifics, I learned that if there can be said to be an archetypal american: they are vibrant, enthused, civil and all embracing. As for the problems of Americna society and culture…and the western world in general…atre too numerous to mention…mainly due to the fact it would invovle me having to write a long account of wrong doings, which will do no good.
Is a hen required to study her egg’s history ?
Not a huge amount, funnily enough we concentrated on Europe. I went to a pretty ‘liberal’ school so we learnt quite a bit about slavery and some about Native Americans. We conveniently overlooked the genocide of Native Americans in favour of concentrating on those poor blacks who were at least still alive and had the possibility of emancipation because they, obviously, demand our sympathy.
A general point about education: forcing our children to believe ‘moral facts’ about (for example) Nazism makes us as bad as them.
Sorry to invoke Samuel L. here, but “We’ve got muthafuckin’ common sense on the post”.
About time someone said it … now if we could just stop it, that would be a miracle.
One more invocation, and then I’m done:
Take it away Impenitent!

The Germans, Dutch, and Swiss learn a great deal more than the English, French and Spanish. The English - completely depends on what courses/periods their school decides to offer, which itself depends on the specialisation of the teachers more often than not. But the Dutch particularly seem to know everything about history.
ya know whats sad is that the u.s. teaches next to nothing about the rest of the world. not even canada or mexico. i learned literally nothing about canada. except that we wouldve went to war with them if they didnt give us some shitty plot of land to make our border a clean line. i know pretty much nothing about europe after the middle ages. what i know about the middle ages i learned from video games and im pretty affluent in history as far as american grading goes. All A’s and a pat on the back from most teachers.
they teach u.s history two or three times and two course in world history which stops and turns into mostly u.s history at about the 1500’s.
(psst, cba, Europeans are a myth, there is no empirical evidence that Europe actually exists … I think all these names that claim to be Europeans here … are really “chat bots” … scripts … don’t believe anything, refute all!!!)
error…error…please reboot.
LMMFAO … good man Obw, play right along … LMAO.
Well done, for a bot and all. Hmmmmm, perhaps AI is feasible after all?
i went to a katholic school ^^
history was generally europe’s, what we learned about the USA, i can’t seperate from the knowledge i gathered elsewhere
(rotten memory)
What this demonstrates is that we should probably run a catchup course here at ILP covering those aspects of American/European history that the rest don’t already know about. I’m quite nifty on British history over the last 300 years and I have lots of books on the French revolution(s). Anyone remember the East India company and the rise of Pitt the Younger?
Then you might be the only person other than my old history teacher to be interested by the fact that I am a direct descendent of William Pitt.
Wow, can I have your autograph ?
That is truly astonishing. Likewise, I should really get your autograph.

Actually I know about that, and really I can’t tell you why.
Hmmmm, probably my Great Uncle … he was an anglophile, and had two libraries devoted to the entire history of merry ole England, and complete volumes of all the monarchies of England, France, Germany, Prussia, Belgium, Austria … I think he had the complete history of Italy as well.
Yup…but I think the political blood has escaped somewhere.
The history that I know comes from my mother’s side of the family. Her family was Scottish and her maiden name was Campbell.
Apparently, the Campbells invited the MacDonalds over to discuss the issue of separation of Scotland from England.
My family side of the issue was to keep England and Scotland united. In the furtherance of our cause (not that a little money hurt) we slaughtered every man, woman, and child in the large party that came under a flag of truce.
And they all sang Hooray for our side.
Glencoe
Chorus: Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe
And covers the grave o’ Donald
And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
And murdered the house o’ MacDonald
They came in the night when the men were asleep
That band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep.
Like murdering foxes, among helpless sheep
They slaughtered the house o’ MacDonald
(Chorus)
They came through the blizzard, we offered them heat
A roof ower their heads, dry shoes for their feet.
We wined them and dined them, they ate of our meat
And slept in the house O’ MacDonald
(Chorus)
They came from Fort William with murder in mind
The Campbell’s had orders, King William had signed
Put all to the sword, these words underlined
And leave no one alive called MacDonald
(Chorus)
Some died in their beds at the hands of the foe
Some fled in the night, and were lost in the snow.
Some lived to accuse him, that struck the first blow
But gone was the house of MacDonald
(Chorus)
