That’s why people come to philosophy forums. They’re nihilistic, self-destructive. They want to be proved wrong, punched in the face. You’re suicidal. That’s what makes you a good philosopher. You’re looking for knowledge, or worse, wisdom. You’re looking for something substantial, some kind of information that can tide your insatiable thirst for more, and more, and more information. And you’ve been scouring the world, the internet, for ages. How long has it been since you slept? But you’ve found your way here, to this post, to this information, full of purpose, full of meaning, full of yearning. You’re ready to take into your mind some great proof, some great fact and argument, that is flawless and irredeemable. You can’t take your eyes off what you’re reading, and why? Because you’ve been thirsty a long time coming. And you’re ready for your drink.
Philosophy forums are full of cynics, and skeptics, and pessimists. Doubters and God haters. Nihilists and fatalists. I like the fatalists the best, don’t you? Somebody readying to cut his wrist and bleed himself out, all over the keyboard, just to prove you wrong. See? This blood is real! Oops, I think I cut too hard, too deep. Shit, this is really coming out of my arm now! Hmm, whoops. Each time a press the next key, the blood smears skip from one letter to the next. Excuse me while I run to the bathroom for some gauze and tape. I thought I was going to say something interesting and thought provoking. But here I am now, bleeding all over my keyboard.
This had something to do with philosophy, originally, but we’ll have to wait awhile until this bleeding stops.
The mind is separate from the natural ‘you.’ The mind is something that is fed all the time to keep itself going. It’s self starting and self perpetuating. Since you feel lost without it, you don’t want its activity to come to an end. Therefore, no answer will satisfy …. you will continue to ask questions despite the answers. For any answer of finality will put an end to the questions. Since the activity of the mind is closely united with the self … and finality puts an end to the questioning … that, in essence, puts an end to you … or, rather, that which identifies you. Your identity is your most valuable asset; you will never allow it to fade away in the grips of finality. It must protect itself and maintain its purpose.
Fuck, yeah! I like hanging out with my fellow bastards or damned cynical, nihilistic, fatalistic, and pessimistic souls on the internet too. It is my escape from the fascist Disney world outside of cyberspace full of crooked lies, deceptions, and bullshit all around.
What a breath of fresh air!
Why if it was up to you such outlets would not exist where you would probably make it fascist Disneyland everywhere including cyberspace.
Top marks for cutting yourself though. Although I doubt you really did, in fact I know for a fact as well that most people will do anything to avoid being proved wrong.
Or ask for a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas–you might shoot your eye out!
I don’t want to be proven wrong. Nor, believe it or not, do I want to prove anyone else wrong. I come to ILP because it’s a fun place to be. Most people here are gentlepeople who talk about things that interest me.
Welcome, atthet. I think you’ll be an asset, given your imagination.
You wouldnt be here if you wanted someone to tell you to do something. We can tell you to do something, but that is not what you want.
What you want is the fusion of the sensual with the divine. The moment when totality of circumstances is uncloistered and infinite consciousness underlying existence is revealed. Finality is its eternal recurrence and the questions are simply the means.
Oughtist, your advice was most helpful. It still hurts to type though. I have another point to write about this topic. But I’ll save it for another time.
Great post. What is scary is that do we really search for substantiality? Would a curious-natured mind be satisfied with a goal accomplished? I’ve been running circles with philosophy for several years now and have been studying philosophy for almost ten and honestly am quite in a stagnated place.
