your name

i have far more intrest in what we choose for ourselves then what is given to us. why did you choose your ilp name.

just to get us kicked off i’ll do me

Glider Pendalehaven is my fist dungeons and dragons character (yes, i remember this though it was many years ago, and yes i know this earns my dork black belt)

Glider was one of the coolest characters of all time, he was a wizard/fighter/thief that turned evil and killed all of his family, then took over their lands, causing strife and discord were ever it went. #-o

so please tell us all why you choose your ilp name :sunglasses:

My name is from the merchant of Venice.

Gobbo is the comedic relief for the play, a jokester obviously. His father, Old Gobbo is a blind man who, in the play is a rather insignificant but he is also Lancelot’s father in history.

The underscore can represent the connection between the wise, cerebral parent of the court jester, and the court jester himself. In this sense I am the span between the aloof, the (attempted) humor of youth and the wise, the evolution of the personality blind to it’s own temporal nature. Or, ‘life’ as some would prefer it.

In following with this blind nature, I picked the name for my email some 7 years ago for no apparent reason other than providence stemming from the initial intellectual roots planted by Bill Shakes. The underscore was included because I didn’t think the code would support a naked space.

The internet screen-names I have used at one time or another since I’ve participated at philosophy forums:

Détrop Geist (combination of sartrean/hegelean ideas)

Détrop (sartrean)

Meursault (camusean)

Brian (real name)

Nanook (eskimo in zappa album)

T’Mershi Duween (character in zappa album)

Epoche (meaning skepsis, also related to Husserl)

Dr. Octave (character in Gong album)

it’s from a From Autumn To Ashes song… i used to be really into them

i still like them a lot, but they’re not in my top 5 favorite bands so to speak

Didn’t we do this thread a couple times already? It’s like deja vu all over again.

Oh, well…what the fuck. My nic pays homage to both Plato and Pirsig. Phaedrus is the character that plays against Socrates in a well known work of Plato. He’s a “McGuffin,” a tool to move Plato’s thought process along. He asks interminable question after interminable question and is generally a pain in the ass (yeah, just like me), but he’s part of the process.

Phaedrus serves a similar function in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance for Robert M. Pirsig. As he tries to cope with a bout of insanity, and fearing his son is slipping down the same slope, that character helps him catalyze his philosophy. Zen was a hugely important book to me; I can honestly say reading it was a defining moment in my life. Before that, I was only interested in science and never gave philosophy a second thought.

“And what is good, Phaedrus, and what is not good - need we ask anyone to tell us these things?”

  • Plato, The Phaedrus

I’m deliberately playing on the false opposition that is presence/absence, by having a name that signifies a presence (the knock at the door) but doesn’t confirm it. It’s a Derridan in-joke that only about 4 people globally find amusing. I’ve been thinking about changing it but I can’t give up nearly 6000 posts at this stage…

Daybreak: Thoughts on the Prejudices of Morality

  • F. Nietzsche, 1881

I’m of the camp who says ‘Dawn’ is the accurate translation of Morgenröte, but that’s not a very cool name for a dude.

I was an anarchist for years and my favorite one
was the prince from Russia. Also my father’s name is
Peter, and so it works well for me. A side note is
on another site, my name was tedder 10. Those have
been the only two names I have ever had on web
sites. so I don’t understand the need to change one’s
name every 10 minutes.

Kropotkin

Of course, you have to remember that most of these people probably weren’t here the last time this came up. We have so many new faces.
:stuck_out_tongue:   :unamused: =D> [-X :^o =P~ #-o ](*,) :-({|= :D/ :-# :-k
BTW, mine is a mix of Sky, which I always thought would be a cool name, and Daemon, which is a term for a program that runs “behind the scenes”. Most familiar of these is the cursed “mailer daemon” which rejects all your outgoing mail.

That reminds me:
And the Daemon said, “I’m sorry it didn’t work out” The tone was compliant but that was mere artifice. Such machines didn’t actually speak, they recited. Their words had been given to them by meticulous programmers and the most advanced vocal simulators. The ability to detect and respond to cues was also only a simulation of interactivity. If you deviated from their admittedly expansive script they would fall silent, unable to act.

Xander is my everyday name and Xanderman was the Christening I recieved when I worked at the dinning hall while I attended college. That also got modified into the moniker Xanderman et al. during a later phase in its development.

My real name is Arri, and upon creating an account with ILP my mind was at tabula rasa.

<— This is the result

It could’ve been worse though; Mercenarri, Legendarri, Revolutionarri, Librarri… and so on. My friends still think its hilarious, apparently.

my name… eh

Gecota, was the name of a character I developed in a story when I was 10 or 11. She was a space pirate(this was after I saw Tenchi). Later I use the name for a White Wolf character, that time she was a vampire.

Anyway, she was my first character I every came up with, and this character has always been close to my heart.

‘Colin’ is my first name.

‘Sign’ is more often than not what one does with there name.

Colinsign is also a play on the words Call and Sign.
(You would never have guessed)

CallandSign. Something vaguely spiritual, esoteric, mysterious.

well me and my friends started this up kind of…it was a name that we kind of attributed to nothing in particular, it is a sort of collaboration of randomness between a group of my friends.

We began to refer to Tony Danza and Mr. Kebah in ways I cannot describe.

Such as…“Who left that giant doody in the toilet?”

“Ahh…Mr. Kebah…”

and I changed it a bit because I thought Kebop rolled off the tongue a little bit better.

Mr. Kebop…I love the sound of it.

My name is boring compared to the rest, Kris is my name and I am from the Sonora Desert area out in Western USA. Just a lil ol desert rat. The real animal desert rats are survivors and very resiliant. So if you are at least second or third generation Southwestern desert born you get the name desert rat only if you love the desert and call it home. I have always been proud to be one. So west is my tribute to my home.

Kris, I can outdo you in the boring department - assuring you that you cannot be the most boring personage here (I don’t think you come close, by the way). My name is just my first name.

Manifested… because I thought it sounded cool.

eh? my ILP username speaks for itself and more clearly it speaks for myself :D/ .
