Your Top Three Philosophers

Recently, Marx was voted ‘Greatest Philosopher Ever’ by 28% of listeners to Radio Four, UK. This shows us the general public either do not value the work of most philosophers or are simply not fully aware of it.

Anyhow, I’d be interested in hearing YOUR top three. You can say why but no more than a paragraph please. For the purposes of this thread, let’s not argue about who is better than who. You can do that in another thread.

To start the ball rolling, my top three (but not my three favourite incidentally) are:

  1. Aristotle
  2. Hume
  3. Popper

edit: removed double ‘not’ (thanks Thirst!).

  1. Hume
  2. Nietzsche
  3. Eco

i sound kinda duetschephillic:

  1. Wittgenstein
  2. Leibniz
  3. Nietzsche

Hello F(r)iends,

I haven’t read much of any “real” philosophers. So I will list three that I have extensively read or studied.

  1. John Maynard Keynes
  2. Adam Smith
  3. Karl Marx

-Thirst

*Nietzsche
*Kierkegaard

*All philosophers by degree…

  1. Hume
  2. Socrates
  3. Nietzsche

In my younger days, the order would have been reversed.
By the way, Kierkegaard is 4.

Kropotkin

  1. Nietzsche
  2. Walter Kaufmann (more of a literary critic, but damnit, I say he counts!)
  3. Jaspers

You, guys, why are you so obsessed by Nietzsche?

I don’t know what my top three is. I am not very much acquainted with great philosophers, but mostly with secondary 20th and 21th century thinkers.

The only one that I can name is Fernand Van Steenberghen, a thomistic philosopher with whom I share now few opinions, but who is very interesting all the same.

Edit: Grenet, another thomistic philosopher, is also interesting and thorough.

What sort of answer to this are you expecting, exactly? You’re surprised he’s popular? I don’t follow. :-s

I’ll list the three who I think have been the most influencial, but not necessarily who I agree with.

  1. Aristotle
  2. Imanuel Kant
  3. Ludwig Wittgenstein

Jon F

I like these guys for different reasons, and one of them I consider to be good to read in order to learn how not to act, but here they are.

  1. Voltaire
  2. Schopenhauer
  3. Nietzsche

I would like to give an honorable mention to Hans Vaihinger.

  1. Heraclitus
  2. Neitzsche
  3. Schopenhauer
  1. Epicurus
  2. Derrida
  3. Nietzsche (everyone puts Nietzsche)
  4. Wittgenstein
  5. detrop

Cheating! Only three!

Nietzsche I only put because everyone puts him and obviously I don’t genuinely think that detrop is the 5th best philosopher of all time. 7th, perhaps, but not 5th…

Epicurus

I might have to change mine now!

I was amazed that no-one mentioned him, or Pyrrho for that matter…

Did Pyrrho write something?

there are a lot of schopenhauer votes. this surprises me… i wonder what i missed besides some well-deserved praise to kant, some sign of the times views on women and things, some glass half empty chicanery, and that minor, but major, tweak on kant by putting the Will as noumena… top three?
