Suppose Yahweh existed, and that he wanted to totally start over with the Ten Commandments. He selects you to re-write them. What would your 10 commandments be? Would you fill the list with mostly “do nots” or with “dos” (like “do not lie” versus “be honest”)?
Thou shalt not rape.
Thou shalt not lie.
Thou shalt not cheat.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not murder.
Thou shalt not lose control of your anger.
Thou shalt not hurt others, phsyically or emotionally.
Thou shalt not live in excess.
Thou shalt help others whenever possible.
Thou shalt do unto others as you’d like others to do unto you.
Good list. I think the whole mess of them can be summed up into a slightly modified version of the last one, which is essentially the golden rule.
However the golden rule is imperfect. I really want someone to pleasure me sexually right now, massage my back, give me money, etc. But I’m not going to treat others this way just because i want them to treat me this way. These are just some examples.
I think it should include a binary conditional: if (you want x AND someone else wants x) do x… Or something like that. Do unto someone as you both would have done unto both of you. Do not unto someone as neither of you would want done to either. This covers the whole spectrum: lying, steal, cheating, raping, emotional/physical damage, killing, also helping, loving, and the like.
But that’s SOCIALISM!!! AAHHH!!! wouldn’t want that now would we?
I would add to the list things like:
Thou shalt understand science.
Thou shalt live an academically curious life.
Thou shalt be a part of the solution.
Thou shalt be as productive as possible.
Thou shalt have fun (assuming it complies with the modified golden rule).
Speaking of fun:
Thou shalt not believe that “creation science” is valid.
Thou shalt not watch The Simple Life.
Thou shalt not wear your pants below the top of you ass.
Thou shalt turn your god damn radio down at a stop light.
Thou shalt not use those bluetooth headsets unless you are driving.
Thou shalt realize that the USA is not the statistically best country in the world.
The Ten Commandments are about 8 or 9 examples of moral behavior, and morality is by nature, negative behavior. Morality can be summed up in my restatement of the Golden Rule. To wit: Morality is honoring the equal rights of all to their life, liberty and property from violation through force or fraud. Immorality is thus the establishment of some form of double standard by said force or fraud.
No compassion and charity are voluntary and examples of virtue, not morality. Socialism mandates “giving”, which is immoral in itself, especially since the determination of who is needy always becomes so arbitrary.
Morality is absolute. Virtue is subjective. You can say that curiosity is good, but it’s doled out unevenly. One person can be passionately curious while not very compassionate or loving, while someone else could be just the opposite. Both have a place in the grand scheme of things, and these are just two of the many aspects of virtue. This works well if we only legislate morality and not virtue (as socialism tries to do ).
