July 12, 1998: Almost eight years before the 2006 match, France played in their first World Cup final (hosted at the Stade de France in northern Paris). The man of that match was Zidane.
Scoring two first-half headers from corners, the “No. 10” was an integral component in France’s 3-0 demolition of Brazil. Known more for his brilliant technical ability on the floor, the 1998 final showed the world Zizou was just as accomplished using his head.
Entering the first instalment of extra time in the 2006 final, right-back Willie Sagnol—in an attacking movement started by Zidane—delivered an exemplary ball into the box, which met the 34-year-old’s head. Any other direction and the pace/power of Zidane’s bullet header would have seen Les Bleus take a one-goal lead after 104 minutes, but the ball was placed centrally, and Buffon saved in spectacular fashion.
Zidane’s head, unfortunately, will not be remembered for his 1998 World Cup heroics, nor his near winner in Berlin, but his 108th-minute moment of madness in the 2006 World Cup final.
FRANCE’S UNLIKELY JOURNEY TO THE 2006 WORLD CUP FINAL
Reaching the final had been a redemption of sorts, particularly in light of the exhaustion which had stalked the team in Asia four years earlier. In 2006 France overcame the age and weariness of their veterans to come within touching distance of regaining their world crown. Adorned in white, they lit up the tournament with two of its finest displays: the last 16 encounter with Spain and the glorious Saturday evening quarter-final with Brazil. In doing so, they embraced player power for the good. Age and weariness were converted to guile and experience for the knockout stages as the team came so close but so far. The seeds of the eventual downfall of the team and its coach were sewn in Germany, however.
When Zinedine Zidane schooled Brazil at the 2006 World Cup
He then found himself up against Brazil in the quarter-finals in a match many predicted would be the last of his career.
Zizou, however, had other ideas. He was exceptionally good in that quarter-final in Frankfurt and provided the assist from which Thierry Henry scored the only goal of the game.
The glare is back now as Zidane approaches to take a free-kick wide on the left flank.
As the ball gets whipped in, the Brazil defenders are all attracted to the front post, while Roberto Carlos is distracted by his own socks.
But the delivery is perfect. Just look where Thierry Henry volleys it from. Dida is left with no chance.
Of the 51 goals Henry scored for France, this was the only one directly assisted by Zidane.

The universe might be finite in spatial extend but unbounded, an overall topology of a closed surface, spherical or a donut (torus) in shape. Which topology is correct depends on the average curvature of space. Positive curvature is a sphere, flat curvature is a torus, and negative curvature is a saddle with infinite possible topologies. A spatially infinite universe cannot be a self-contained system, but rather is part of a larger system taking in information from boundaries infinitely far away, the space outside being explicable by what comes in from the world beyond the boundary.
The different possibilities as to the shape of the cosmos:

- Finite and Closed (Sphere - Positive curvature)
- Digital and Flat (Torus - No curvature)
