a thread for mundane ironists

Mary-Louise Parker

I don’t get tired of hearing that somebody liked my work.

Or here: I don’t get tired of hearing that somebody liked my posts. lol

I put a lot of stock in the written word, and the power of it. That’s what I love about acting and reading scripts. Words are really powerful. I don’t believe that axiom at all - words can absolutely hurt you. Words can wound. They can do a lot of damage.

What, even here?!

I’m naked in Esquire in August. I was naked on the set the other day. I’m always naked. I’m naked right now, in fact.

Weeds!

Mediocrity is underrated.

We’ll need a context for sure here.

Unless you got a really good reason, you should be nice.

Let’s exchange reasons.

My favorite scene in all of movies is Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird: You see him where he’s on the porch, and his face is almost completely obscured. I don’t want to see his face.

I have about 25 favorite scenes myself.

sad socrates

The best way to be happy is to imagine things worse.

Nope, I’ve tried that. Didn’t even come close.

I warned me about myself

But don’t let that stop you, okay?

I may be godless, but at least I’m depressed.

Go figure, right?

Make believe, not art.

Well, if you can tell them apart that is.

Could you die? Subscribe, Like and Follow to find out.

Or don’t and die anyway.

No Thyself

You first.

Charlotte Bronte

Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by education; they grow firm there, firm as weeds among stones.

Yo, Pinheads! You’re up again.

I can live alone, if self-respect, and circumstances require me so to do. I need not sell my soul to buy bliss. I have an inward treasure born with me, which can keep me alive if all extraneous delights should be withheld, or offered only at a price I cannot afford to give.

Of course she’s only paraphrasing me.

The eagerness of a listener quickens the tongue of a narrator.

Like me posting here, right?

Intelligence and proper education will give you independence of spirit.

Define independence please.

To see and know the worst is to take from Fear her main advantage.

Well, not counting the tons and tons of exceptions of course.

You never felt jealousy, did you, Miss Eyre? Of course not: I need not ask you; because you never felt love.

My guess: it’s a bit more complicated.

“In my opinion it is impossible to achieve a coherent objective picture of the world on the basis of concepts which are taken more or less from inner psychological experience.” Albert Einstein

See, I told you!

“Ideas come from everything.” Alfred Hitchcock

In other words, not just from Hollywood.

“Revenge is sweet and not fattening.” Alfred Hitchcock

Not only that but practice makes perfect.

“…maybe we find it when we die. maybe we don’t. you’ve got your books of philosophy, your priest, your preacher, your scientist, so don’t ask me.” Charles Bukowski

You can keep asking me though.

“Respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality.” Frank Herbert

The truth? Pick one.

"I always knew that literature satisfied a taste for considering life in a certain way, but that it wasn’t a guide to living.” Philip Roth

The Human Stain for example.

Jordan Ellenberg

A basic rule of mathematical life: if the universe hands you a hard problem, try to solve an easier one instead, and hope the simple version is close enough to the original problem that the universe doesn’t object.

You know, in a free will world.

Knowing mathematics is like wearing a pair of X-ray specs that reveal hidden structures underneath the messy and chaotic surface of the world.

X-ray Specs!! From the comic books though.

Improbable things happen a lot.

Unlike, for example, impossible things. Which often hardly ever happen at all.

Working an integral or performing a linear regression is something a computer can do quite effectively. Understanding whether the result makes sense—or deciding whether the method is the right one to use in the first place—requires a guiding human hand.

Yo, GPT-SHOGGOTH! You’re up!!

…if gambling is exciting, you’re doing it wrong.

On the other hand, don’t bet on it.

One of the most painful parts of teaching mathematics is seeing students damaged by the cult of the genius. The genius cult tells students it’s not worth doing mathematics unless you’re the best at mathematics, because those special few are the only ones whose contributions matter. We don’t treat any other subject that way! I’ve never heard a student say, “I like Hamlet, but I don’t really belong in AP English—that kid who sits in the front row knows all the plays, and he started reading Shakespeare when he was nine!” Athletes don’t quit their sport just because one of their teammates outshines them. And yet I see promising young mathematicians quit every year, even though they love mathematics, because someone in their range of vision was “ahead” of them.

So, what do you think…maybe?

Philosophy Tweets

“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” Seneca the Younger

My guess: some more than others.

“The Buddha taught that we’re not actually in control, which is a pretty scary idea. But when you let things be as they are, you will be a much happier, more balanced, compassionate person.” Pema Chodron

We’ll need a context of course. Or, as absurd as it seems to me, is that missing the point?

“The truth always carries the ambiguity of the words used to express it.” Frank Herbert

See, I told you.

"Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.” Sun Tzu

You know, for the suckers.

“There is no instance of a nation benefitting from prolonged warfare.” Sun Tzu

Three words:
Military
Industrial
Complex

“What distinguishes Sun Tzu from Western writers on strategy is the emphasis on the psychological and political elements over the purely military.” Henry Kissinger

Two words:
Bilderberg
Group

Eugene Ionesco

It’s only when I say that everything is incomprehensible that I come as close as possible to understanding the only thing it is given to us to understand.

You know, going back to the existence of existence itself.

There are more dead people than living. And their numbers are increasing. The living are getting rarer.

Obviously: if you know what he means.

Many people have delusions of grandeur but you’re deluded by triviality.

In other words, if the trivial shoe fits.

A really conscientious doctor ought to die with his patient. The captain goes down with his ship.

And nowadays her too.

The Arts are man’s most useless … and essential … activity.

Things those like him say.

You’ve always made the mistake of being yourself.

Not counting me of course.

“The punishment of every disordered mind is its own disorder.” Augustine of Hippo

“Conditions” as I call them.

I know that I did.

I know, I know: What if that was actually true?!!

“I’m fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in.” George McGovern

I shook this man’s hand. Also, Nancy Kulp’s.

Mircea Eliade

Light does not come from light, but from darkness.

Next up: where darkness comes from.

The great cosmic illusion is a hierophany…One is devoured by Time, not because one lives in Time, but because one believes in its reality, and therefore forgets or despises eternity.

I know, I know: define sacred. If, for example, you are a senior citizen.

The way towards ‘wisdom’ or towards ‘freedom’ is the way towards your inner being. This is the simplest definition of metaphysics.

Ah, the “real me” again!!

If we pay no attention to it, time does not exist.

First, however, in undertaking this task, let’s synchoronize our watches.

In imitating the exemplary acts of a god or of a mythic hero, or simply by recounting their adventures, the man of an archaic society detaches himself from profane time and magically re-enters the Great Time, the sacred time.

Of course he’s only paraphrasing Fixed Jacob.

It would be frightening to think that in all the Cosmos, which is so harmonious, so complete and equal to itself, that only human life is happening randomly, that only one’s destiny lacks meaning.

If not…terrifying?

Sure, go ahead, explain that to us.

“Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance, is the death of knowledge.” Alfred North Whitehead

Let’s call this the Mr. Pinhead Objectivist Syndrome.

“History is merely a list of surprises. It can only prepare us to be surprised yet again.” Kurt Vonnegut

That was before 2020 of course. Now nothing surprises us.

You might wonder why I bring this one back again.

2] pinheads
3] Stooges
4] all of the above

“To be is to do - Socrates
To do is to be - Sartre
Do Be Do Be Do - Sinatra”
Kurt Vonnegut

Though not necessarily in that order.

“I’m sick of not having the courage to be an absolute nobody.” J.D. Salinger

Like he’s anybody now.

"These crisis cults, already well established among followers of the Christian Right and Donald Trump, peddle magical thinking and an infantilism that promises — in exchange for all autonomy — prosperity, a return to a mythical past, order and security. " Chris Hedges

Let’s call them Republicans, he suggested.

“Who is more to be pitied, a writer bound and gagged by policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say?” Kurt Vonnegut

Yes.

“Virtually every writer I know would rather be a musician.” Kurt Vonnegut

Next up: virtually every philosopher.

Peter Watts

Stars, everywhere. So many stars that I could not for the life me understand how the sky could contain them all yet be so black.

Now of course we know why.
Don’t we?

People aren’t rational. We’re not thinking machines, we’re - we’re feeling machines that happen to think.

That can’t be good.
Well, if it’s true anyway.

This is how you communicate with a fellow intelligence: You hurt it, you keep on hurting it, until you can distinguish the speech from the screams.

Anyone here know what brought that on?

There’s no such things as survival of the fittest. Survival of the most adequate, maybe. It doesn’t matter whether a solution’s optimal. All that matters is whether it beats the alternative.

The adequate? Maybe, but it lacks the cache of the fittest.

I brought her flowers one dusky Tuesday evening when the light was perfect. I pointed out the irony of that romantic old tradition— the severed genitalia of another species, offered as a precopulatory bribe—and then I recited my story just as we were about to fuck. To this day, I still don’t know what went wrong.

Hell, it could be any one of many things.

Every concert pianist knows that the surest way to ruin a performance is to be aware of what the fingers are doing. Every dancer and acrobat knows enough to let the mind go, let the body run itself. Every driver of a manual vehicle arrives at destinations with no recollection of the stops and turns and roads traveled in getting there. You are all sleepwalkers, whether climbing creative peaks or slogging through some mundane routine for the thousandth time. You are all sleepwalkers.

My guess: whatever that means.

Richard Avedon

To be an artist, you have to nurture the things that most people discard.

And who discards more things here than me, he wondered.

All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.

Let’s call this a clever way of saying almost nothing at all.

Start with a style and you are in chains, start with an idea and you are free.

You tell me: google.com/search?source=un … 66&bih=625

My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.

Not unlike our posts here. You know, if you’re me.

I always prefer to work in the studio. It isolates people from their environment. They become in a sense… symbolic of themselves.

Symbolic of themselves? Right.

It’s not hard being great occasionally. It’s difficult to be good consistently.

On the other hand, who gets to make that distinction? Whether in regard to his photographs or our posts.

“Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.” Voltaire

Yes, including the use of semi-colons.

“If you live long enough, you’ll see that every victory turns into a defeat.” Simone de Beauvoir

Any exceptions that you know of?

“Life is a series of collisions with the future; it is not the sum of what we have been, but what we yearn to be.” Jose Ortega y Gasset

Some more infuriating than others, he suspected.

“Clocks slay time…time is dead as long as it is being clicked off by little wheels; only when the clock stops does time come to life.” William Faulkner

Well, not counting the real world of course.

Diogenes

I pissed on the man who called me a dog. Why was he so surprised?

Next up: someone pisses on you for calling him a pinhead.

It is not that I am mad, it is only that my head is different from yours.

My guess: dasein.

He has the most who is most content with the least.

Sounds like me. You know, if it’s true.

One original thought is worth a thousand mindless quotings.

I’ll need to hear the thought first of course.

If only it was as easy to banish hunger by rubbing the belly as it is to masturbate.

Let’s discuss why it’s not.

We come into the world alone and we die alone. Why, in life, should we be any less alone?

Some actually prefer it.

Not much that doesn’t include. Or, for some here, exclude.

great quotes friend!

It is time for dead languages to keep quiet.

Let’s name them.

Why grab possessions like thieves, or divide them like socialists when you can ignore them like wise men?

Let’s note the exceptions.

Like all religions, love has more believers than practitioners.

A hell of a lot more.

I’m fond of human beings, but only one at a time.

And spaced as far apart as possible.

My queerness is not a vice, is not deliberate, and harms no one.

Tell that to them.

The past is such a subtle thing. [But] in the end, nothing else exists, everything is made of the past, even the future.

Unless of course it’s even trickier than that.
