Faith = The interpretation of dreams only it’s dreaming in the waking state.
Well we can argue definitions ad infinitum, but since you ask, no i don’t consider trusting loved ones to be faith at all. I consider it to be “calculated risk based on evidence.” If you think that phrase is equal to faith then we have no disagreement. But I do think faith implies a faulty epistemology that involves ignorance, be it a willful ignorance or not.
Gamer,
I would think that your stated definition is pretty close to faith, if not right there on it. But if you have defined faith as “anything you might think is faith”, then I would absolutely conclude that you do not have faith. You have foreclosed the term. Perhaps if you give me a defintion of faith, I could find some instance that might apply…
Dunamis
“Faith” often includes questionable epistemology, like a personal feeling or revelation. This is different than beliefs based on repeatable evidence, independent of observer. I suppose you can argue that at some seminal point of my actions I have “faith” in causality, space, time, that Burma exists, etc., but there is a huge distinction between kinds and degrees of faith, so much so that using the same word offends my sensibility. The fact that we all have “beliefs” doesn’t explain a lot. I can believe I am a human, and you can believe you’re a ham sandwich. What does this tell us about the concept “belief” and those who adopt it? Very little. Faith is too broad a term, and we need to delineate degrees in order to avoid lumping everything under “faith” thus giving the zealots and myopic dogmatists the wiggle room they need to keep on keeping on.
Gamer,
I guess where we differ is that I think that we all are “zealots and myopics”. None are excluded from that. It is my sense that the greatest dangers come from those who do not realize their zeal nor their myopia.

Dunamis…we have to decide to a degree, who we are, what we are and what we want…this takes myopia and zeal, I suppose. Still so different than dogmatic faith. It’s a necessary faith, a self-imposed delusion, and the best kind because you always know deep down, like Socrates, that is merely a context you choose or accept rather than a faith in some absolute.
Hmm, glad to see fans of comedy out there. But triple post, Detrop…that’s a little too much homage. (Just teasing. I know it was an accident.)
