A gratuitous attempt to meet people...(aka ILP Gathering)

Would you come to an ILP meet in London?

 • Definitely.
 • I would if it was nearer where I lived
 • Maybe, I’d need convincing.
 • Not a chance

Dear all,

As you will know, many online communities have meets and gatherings. This requires members to take the courageous step of venturing away from their computer screens and excercising those oft forgotten social skills for a day. And damnit…why should we be any different?

Clearly it will never be possible for all ILP members to attend and I urge all those who live with in a close vicinity of one another to get in the car and meet other ILP people. Indeed, I believe some already have.

So, the long and short of it is…

If there was an ILP meet at a neutral place in London, England, would you be willing/able to attend?

Please respond here so I can get an idea of whether it’s worth pursuing.

All the best,

Ben

I want to meet a few people from ILP, but it would probably not be a good idea.

If I went insane and met them, they would have to come to me. Local coffee shop type thing.

london ontario maybe

There’s a matter of time and money that probably impeeds 99% of all ILP members from actually commiting to a physical IRL ILP meet. Of course, that other 1% probably isn’t interested anyway.

Would you be willing to fly overseas ben?

That is mainly the question you are asking to all us “colonists of the new world” around here…

…besides… in the “unlikely” event that 100% of all “active” ILP members came to a live IRL meeting, Shyster would be the center of attention, if not Marshall McDaniel.

Weeelll - yes I’d love to come, but, being somewhat impoverished in terms of Sterling at least, it would have to be in the summer school hols, when I sometimes fly back to England to visit the folks… (Hint hint  )

Though, to be honest, I think about 5 minutes after the bar opened - the whole shebang would turn into a punch-up.

And Sage is right, Shyster would bring a few of her ‘models’ with her, and those that survived the punch-up, would have an orgy. (Again, hint hint :evilfun: )

1 question - when/if this thing gets off the ground, and some numbers of overseas people are confirmed… How about scaring up a decent group-rate on accomodation… I’d rather not sleep in a dustbin with Smelly Frank after sharing a bottle of meths strained through a loaf of bread.

What Monooq said

Would the DEFINITELY people like to say who they are?

Me. [as long as it’s summer ie: definately maybe]

Tab,

Well technically it is summer at the moment. Do you mean British summer which lasts for about 3 minutes, or turkish summer?

Basically…give me some dates…

I was hoping to get something going in the next month or so…

Ben

yes, no, maybe…

Damn - I was thinking more long-term, ie: next summer (anywhere from Mid June to the end of August) as I’ve done my world-touring for this year.

Oh well. If this one goes well, perhaps you’ll make it a yearly thing…

Sorry. (Hah - to anyone who cares)

Pfff - and I’d already jotted down my “To-Punch” list. :unamused:

Ben:

There is only one way to make this possibility democratically reasonable with all things considered. First, find out how many people would want to. Second, find out where they live. Third, find a place in the middle of that area. Then, if there is an agreement, buy tickets far in advance so that they are cheap. (Some of us are broke…he…he) Plan it soon, but do it in a year or six months or something.

That’s the only reasonable way to do it. What if the majority of the people who would like to meet are Americans. Wouldn’t, say, the east coast be better? Hey, Raleigh N.C. is perfect. Its in the middle with a major airport. That’s closest to me. (I am an opportunist, obviously, and would make a good salesman too)

But seriously, does it have to be in Europe just because that’s where you are?

Hello F(r)iends,

I will be going on holiday next month, so I can’t make it until next year. I would definitely be up to going next summer too. I will go on holiday for up to 3 weeks (min. 2 weeks) in Germany for the World Cup! So, if it is in Europe, why not for World Cup… we can watch England fail to qualify for the second round together… :stuck_out_tongue: Also, I may go on holiday to Greece in the late fall for a week. What better place for philosophers to meet?

And you all get to meet Childsplay in the flesh… Though you better not touch that flesh! :imp:

Me too…planning on going to London next summer anyways.

Ben, summer has been cancelled. Have you seen the leaves have already started falling.

Tab, you could stay with me darlin’.

I would be a definately if it was in London. No time to travel to the States right now…I was thinking more on the lines of Goa India in December to escape the depressing darkness that is England

A

I just got an idea… tell me what you guys think.

What if we did a simlutaneous msn/webcam chat type chat thing…

it’s not the same as meeting in real life, but we could get more participants… and I’m willing to bet people would at least be a little more inebriated than in real life anyways… then again there is booze in real life

I’m not saying to not do the RL thing… but we could do this too

anyways… whaddya think? :sunglasses:

I’d happily turn up in London, it’s only a few hours from here.

However I’m rather unpopular, so perhaps I shouldn’t attend.

Detrop,

I take your point but there is nothing democratic about ILP. I would be more than happy for there to be a thread dedicated to finding out where people lived for the purposes of meeting up. There is no reason why members in the USA/Canada/Oz shouldn’t be able to meet up as well. However, if I am going to organise a meet, I’d like to be there myself and London is an easily accessible location in the UK.

If there is enough local interest then we can organise a date within the next few weeks. A lot of people say they would be available during the summer next year and so it would make sense to plan something now for then to enable people to plan and book tickets etc.

Cheers

Ben

psh, don’t worry, i like you.

Even though I’m a homophobic racist?
