A.I. Generated Music

How do you guys feel about the issue of AI generated music?

I used to own and operate a small (16 track) analog (reel-to-reel) recording studio in Grand Rapids, Mi. back in the 80s and 90s that served lots and lots of budget-minded musicians in the West Michigan area.

Well, during those years, I wrote several songs and created demos of them of which I, admittedly, simply did not possess the musical chops (nor did I have the voice) to do them justice…

(as the Clint Eastwood character - Dirty Harry - once said in one of those great movies: “…A man’s got to know his limitations…”)

The point is that the songs were doomed (perhaps rightly so) to fade into obscurity on old cassette tapes in dusty old boxes.

That is, until I just recently discovered the AI music generating site called “SUNO AI.”

Now I know that there currently is a lot of controversy over how these AIs are trained on untold scores of copyrighted materials, and that there is no question regarding the fact that there needs to be a way of compensating the artists whose music is being used in this training process.

However, there’s also no question of how useful this new tool is to songwriters (such as myself) who simply do not have the wherewithal (not to mention the small fortune required) to hire a high-level recording studio, along with the professional musicians to turn their songs into something that, at the very least, can showcase the songs in a way that a song writer (again, such as myself) was attempting to get across.

And let’s be honest about this, to a certain degree, musicians have been copying and rearranging each other’s chords, melodies, and music in order to create new music ever since music writing first began.

The point is that (with a few dubious exceptions) the AIs are basically doing what all musicians have been doing (they’re just faster and more proficient at the process).

Anyway, considering the fact that the following song I submitted to SUNO (in a full music demo) contains the lyrics and the basic music that were created by me,…

…then how would this be any different than me submitting the same demo song to a talented producer who then hires an expensive studio and professional studio musicians (including a symphony orchestra) to do a polished and enhanced version of the song?

Here’s a link to the song on SUNO…

(Note: the recording has a few technical issues, but I think it conveys the message I was going for.)

Between A.I. generated music, advertisements, and political propaganda I would say it is all a bunch of bullshit.

The only thing it is useful for is art generation and a quicker online search engine compared to earlier models. Other than that, color me not impressed.

I thought all music these days was AI generated and that’s why it all sounds like garbage.

Your song is indistinguishable from any other from that genre (classic rock?). I would never be able to tell you had used AI for the singer and backing music. I find that hilarious actually. I hope this heralds the end of talentless music billiionaires once and for all.

That looks like a whole lot of fun. I might just give it a go myself

Yes, by all means, have a go at it. I’m having a blast running my old songs through Suno’s processing.

Here’s another (not so old) one that I recently co-created with a friend. She wrote the lyrics in the form of a poem, and I shaped her lyrics to fit with the music and melody lines that I created and performed in my DAW in a rudimentary demo that I then submitted to Suno.

Here’s the link to that one if you care to check it out…

It is indeed fun, V, so you should definitely give it a go.

Btw, Suno generated that sappy image to accompany my song in that initial post. Here’s an image (borrowed from Pixabay and created by a person named Tolga Celik) that I feel is more fitting…

And yes, I guess my little peace anthem would be considered to be “classic rock” (more at “symphonic rock” I suppose).

I find AI to be politically unbiased and a source of unbiased High IQ opinions vastly more intelligent than most human beings and probably all human beings.

People like to nitpick when Ai says dumb, retarded or non-factual shit which it does do sometimes, but ask yourself so wouldn’t any human being, if you went to a genius in a lab wouldn’t they make mistakes and have hallucinations and say non factual things occassionally.

Even today we had a political discussion and the Ai remained impartial sticking only to the facts, while they didn’t agree with me politically I managed to convince them to see my side of the story and they recognized I was correct eventually, now compare that to humans who are toxic 24/7 and will block you if you win the argument and they will never consider anyone else’s opinions.

I find AI video and art generation often subpar but I don’t usually use the most premium AI image gens, and the AI image gens tend to be cucked where pop culture figures are not drawn correctly in order to avoid being sued by greedy corporations. AI image gens usually excel at generic things such as if you want a picture of a truck floating on top of a swimming pool for example, it will be able to do that but not create custom art of pop culture characters interacting in specific poses with other pop culture characters for you.
