How do you guys feel about the issue of AI generated music?
I used to own and operate a small (16 track) analog (reel-to-reel) recording studio in Grand Rapids, Mi. back in the 80s and 90s that served lots and lots of budget-minded musicians in the West Michigan area.
Well, during those years, I wrote several songs and created demos of them of which I, admittedly, simply did not possess the musical chops (nor did I have the voice) to do them justice…
…(as the Clint Eastwood character - Dirty Harry - once said in one of those great movies: “…A man’s got to know his limitations…”)
The point is that the songs were doomed (perhaps rightly so) to fade into obscurity on old cassette tapes in dusty old boxes.
That is, until I just recently discovered the AI music generating site called “SUNO AI.”
Now I know that there currently is a lot of controversy over how these AIs are trained on untold scores of copyrighted materials, and that there is no question regarding the fact that there needs to be a way of compensating the artists whose music is being used in this training process.
However, there’s also no question of how useful this new tool is to songwriters (such as myself) who simply do not have the wherewithal (not to mention the small fortune required) to hire a high-level recording studio, along with the professional musicians to turn their songs into something that, at the very least, can showcase the songs in a way that a song writer (again, such as myself) was attempting to get across.
And let’s be honest about this, to a certain degree, musicians have been copying and rearranging each other’s chords, melodies, and music in order to create new music ever since music writing first began.
The point is that (with a few dubious exceptions) the AIs are basically doing what all musicians have been doing (they’re just faster and more proficient at the process).
Anyway, considering the fact that the following song I submitted to SUNO (in a full music demo) contains the lyrics and the basic music that were created by me,…
…then how would this be any different than me submitting the same demo song to a talented producer who then hires an expensive studio and professional studio musicians (including a symphony orchestra) to do a polished and enhanced version of the song?
Here’s a link to the song on SUNO…

(Note: the recording has a few technical issues, but I think it conveys the message I was going for.)
