Just for kicks, lets talk about the most likely outcome of the future of human inhancement in society?
Because I refuse to even go so far as to comprehend and feel for the “people” who want to stop bodily progress and inhancement, I will make an estimate that their “argument” will fail, and things like plastic surgery are proof that body modification already exists, and human-ability-inhancement is just the next step of an already legal practice.
But if we can drill a hole in an upborn babies head, then suck the brain out of it and despose of this “thing” as if it was “biological wastse” [abortion], and at the same time ban stem-cell research – it’s just so stupid that I’m astounded.

as for the future of humankind…well…we will make it, and we will leave this earth eventually, before this earth has been destroyed.
through the wars and struggle we will make it out and continue.
if we make it off of the planet earth then i think that it is entirely possible that human existence could continue for perhaps billions of years.
but then we have to worry about the sun exploding before that…so i dunno it depends on how much space technology has advanced by that time and if we will be capable of interstellar travel. perhaps anti-gravity will play a significant role in this. we could one day be able to manipulate space-time fabric.

More than anything, I would say that these ideas fall under the big umbrella known as the “UNKNOWN”. The unknown scares people, it violates that which makes them feel secure. Look at the mess that has become GM in Europe. Totally bonkers.
There are good arguments against GM, such as the companies that are selling the GM products (Monsanto comes to mind) are willing to screw people over for a small increase in profits. However, that isn’t why people protest these products. shakes head
Anyway, it’s probably not wise to toy with evolution, (especially when it comes to the mind,) creating situations mentally and physically, we as humans (and society) aren’t set up to deal with without throughly thinking through the ramifications.
Hitler would love such technologies. Say we wanted to create his blonde, blue-eyed Ayran race.
I admit there is culture lag. Also, some form of enhancements we have today are good, such as hearing implants. There should probably be a line drawn between “good” and “bad” ones.
Good enhancements usually involve changes for the betterment of one’s health, such as pacemakers. Our society has enough useless ones that aren’t necessarily evil, such as breast implants and nose-jobs. I think eventually, when everyone can afford enhancements, or when humankind has evolved morally as well as mentally, then it might be acceptable to use the enhancement of choice. But such circumstances are far in the future.
Enhancements that we could use now, such as cloning, are unsafe due to possibly dangerous physical effects. And I mentioned the Hitler argument.
Frankly, i dont think Hitler would really care about stem cell research. He did not seem to concerned with technology that could possibly find cures to every imaginable disease and generally improve the human condition.
He was more concerned with technology that would enable his tanks to fire bigger and more powerful guns and stuff like that.
I could see stem cell research posing a major problem for Hitler, actually. On the one had, he would have a source of fertilized eggs ready to be used, but given his strict vegetarianism and strong emphasis on fecundity, the idea of aborting a German child would be against a great deal of what he stood for.
So, then he’d be struck supporting a further weaking of the Ayran race by polluting it Jew-ness, or he’d be stuck without access to a technology that could help his cause.
It’s more likely that the organisms that will leave earth will not be human. “Human” evolved tools to deal with an eco-system. “Human” has no natural tools to deal with outer-space, overpopulation, etc. “Human” is only “good” or “powerful” when it’s hooked up to its little life support system called “civilization/oxygen/sugars/minterals/” etc, the list goes on, and just because animals are less organized then us, doesn’t mean that we are fantastic. In fact, I’d be quite accurate if I claimed that all 6.5 billion of us are pathetic in light of our exploitable weaknesses.
We wont need to travel to a new solar system, just launch self-sufficient pods far away, or land on planets farther from the sun, but 5billion years or so of time antil we need to leave, that’s allot of time! The sun’s midcycle slowly is in transition, not our main problem.
What kind of technology existed 200 years ago compared to now? Compare that to “Moore’s Law” multipled by 2 billion years or so.
Technology isn’t the problem.
The main problem is a mass of temporary and out-of-date morons. Times have changed and natural-evolution is too slow to cope.
It’s not going to go nova, is it? Isn’t it just going to expand then shrink?
Heh. Anti-gravity isn’t the question. Resources and energy are the question. But molecular construction? If this exists, then we are basically set for colonizing of any planet, not that “we” will be “human” at that theoretical time.

Nanobiobots have more likely chances of that; there can be a virul and a immune system nanobot constructed, therefor one can undo the other, much like a bullet and a bullet proof vest. Defence and offence advance at the same time.
“Evolution” is stupid. It’s about random mutation and success rates, and is “perfected” when everyone who is “unfit” is killed or dies. I don’t see why “toying” with it would be any worse then a life saving medical presedure. It’s all “altering our body”.
You were partially right, but cloning an organ by means of a tissue sample then surgically implanting it, is far better and “safer” then the rejection issues of someone elses organ being put into your body, not to mension that person loosing an organ that he can’t even regrow on his own.
“Cloning” is about as unsafe as birth and cell reproduction. The create life, not destroy it. “Cloning” is simple, and it is a stimulation of abilities that cells already had.
I’m glad that you noticed the similarities of human inhancement with the hearing aid. Does a hearing aid turn an old man into an evil flesh eating moster who can hear victims up to 9 miles away, as he hunts them down? Or maybe the hearing aid blows up and his brains fly out? Or does it mindcontrol his brain and cause him to hear things like: “Kill that baby over there!” – “Don’t take that away I’m eating that God damnit!” – “Doh!” – “Eat my shorts man.”.
Or maybe it’s just an example of a newly born, stable and very helpful cyborgism within the species?
