a trip to utah

I’m off to Utah, aka mormonland, for the better part of a week. That means no coffee, no cigarettes and no booze. So what book do I take?

PS. There’s a lesson here somewhere, I just know it…

A looooooooong one. Good luck to you!!! Be brave!!!

Well, whatever book you take, just don’t forget to pack your hat and seer stone.

The first good long book that comes to mind is The Brothers Karamozov.

There’s some good hiking in the state. Maybe a book of local flora and fauna?

I’d bring Harry Potter and something cool I just found at borders – William Dunham’s “Journey through Genius: the Great Theorems of Mathematics”, or “Euler: the Master of Us All”. Euler was such a badass.

I’d take the book, “How to waste a perfectly good chance to see beautiful mountain scenery by reading” by D. Youseedat…

I agree with Imp, so would recommend something a little lighter: The Dice Man by Luke Reinhart. It´s a fairly light and entertaining book about a bored pychiatrist who decides to surrender his choices to the throw of a dice… You can imagine the over-the-top scenarios it leads to. It has some interesting stuff to say about personality and selfhood, without being too demanding. It really made me think about who “I” am, and the malleability of personality. E.g. am I playing/acting my personality or am I genuinely that personality? Is my dominant self neglecting my many other selves? To what extent should we celebrate or follow chance? etc.

@nihilistic: I’m reading the Idiot actually. This is my first time around with Dostoyevsky and I must say I am mightily impressed.

You can drink there. All the places to get drinks have to be “private clubs”. Most of them let you buy a temporary membership for a few bucks that lasts a few days or so.

Jeez, what part of Utah? When I was there they had plenty of booze, smokes and coffee for sale. Mormons are not all orthodox ROFL they are people too you know. A bit stiff but, they do have their human vices.

They do have some laws about booze and smokes, but, none about coffee that I know of. They have to wake up too you know. Milking a cow is dangerous when you are bleary eyed.

Believe it or not they have legalized cable TV and sattelite also. Now the TVs are illegal.
