Authority has nothing to do with reason. Authority is built on personal character that acquires its strength through its actions and the trust they built in others. A man speaking out of authority does not have to provide reasons, people listen to him because they trust him and they trust him because his life shows his conviction and fortitude in certain values. Jesus was such an authority because people followed him, not because of what he said, but because of how he lived and only then did he teach them, again, not out of reason but out of an authority his personal character acquired.
