Why are we archiving threads?

The one I saw appeared to have devolved into ugly, illogical madness.
Archiving can mean a few different things depending on the forum settings, but usually it’s less “censorship” and more housekeeping / moderation load management.
Two common reasons:
Prevent “necroposting” on old threads that are basically settled (or that get resurrected just to relitigate the same fight).
Freeze threads that have devolved into personal attacks / repetitive mudslinging, without having to keep moderating them forever.
If it’s the second case, archiving is sometimes a softer option than deleting posts or handing out bans: the content stays visible, but the thread stops generating new heat.
If someone thinks a thread was archived prematurely, maybe the best remedy is a clear “unarchive criteria” (e.g., cool-down period, topic rewrite, or a mod request with a reason).
