I didnt get to see this in 3D, and i’m told it massively improved the film…
For anyone who knows the story/poem of Beowulf, it may be an irritating movie (it was for me), because they changed the story somewhat, a story which really does not need to be changed.
Once you get over the strange plasticity of the CGI faces, and the dead eyes ,and the wierd mouths - then its a great fun romp. Good manly soundtrack and some absolutely superb monster design.
However - it would have been a far superior movie if they had a) stuck to the original story and b) made it live action and kept the CGI for the monsters. The horses looked like they were made of lego, and as there is with CGI still, it just was too clean, even when they try to make it look dirty.
Still, I enjoyed their visualisation of Beowulf who in the old english poem is described as being head and shoulders taller than other men and having the strength of 30 - and they strangely chose for him to fight the beast Grendel naked (meaning they had to strategically place objects all through the scene so the kids didn’t get a view of his danglies). There was the odd nice joke (not many) and the final fight is edge of the seat stuff.
although they went down the route of 300 and people yelling - this time it was ‘I AM BEOWULF’ - which he doesn’t do in the poem!
