Rip-roaring Lennon at his best, ala Twist and Shout. Ray Davies for personality. Gilmour for smoothness and lack of emotion – sublime. Oh and that guy from Sublime - Santaria especially. Brooker from Procol, and how can we forget Perry Farrel? He’s not human. Radiohead and Flaming Lips, and I think Tweedy is of the moment in a way. He has a way of singing for all of us, especially in YHF.
Ladies: Aimee Mann can sing, Melanie from Brand New Key, Fiona Apple has pipes that always make me blush and yearn, not sure why. Martha from the Vandellas, and Carole King for earthy honesty. The Shaggs!
I don’t like voices that sound like instruments. I like voices that sound like voices.
Jim Morisson-a wonderfully archetypal masculine voice(Achilles’s voice must have sounded that way), Dave Gilmour-serene, unearthly and…hmm…Ozzy Osbourne-how high-pitched can it be?
What about women?..Dido-I really love her voice!
Best voices that I know of in music are a Fender Stratocaster, a Gibson and a Les Paul (in the guitar section), a Steinway piano and a Stradivarius violin.
Uhh…would have to go on my list of worst voices ever.
Now are we talking best as in favorite, or best as in actual quality, because they are highly different. There are many singing voices that I enjoy that have very little actual vocal purity and training. Like many on Imp’s list are good singers, but have horrid voice quality.
Currently looking at music selection to help jog memory and not leave anyone out. Will be back with list.
Love Mariah and Whitney if they weren’t wannabe trailer-trash. Mariah is such a beautiful woman with so much talent, but chooses to look like a hooker. And good God… Whatever happened to Whitney!
How can you compare Luther with John Lennon or Elvis? Love that Bo Bice guy, but for male voices I am into that Joe Cocker type…
and there is something about that sexy voice of Sting. Ooooh.
I love Seals’ voice, and Chicago’s (Happy Man, Beginnings, Call on Me, great old songs), Sade’s (very sultry), Teena Marie’s (not particularly crazy about her songs, but her voice is great, she can belch out high notes without doing the falsetto…is this correct to say? I forget the voice term ). Oh, and Freddy Mercury. And other classical singers I forget the name of.
