The average person there makes 1200$ a year. A family member just got back from there a few days ago. He will retire there. Other than the rebels and lack of basic medicines or lack of knowledge of basic medicines for those in the country and medical assistance for the poor in the cities. Its not a bad place to live if you are a man. Now as a female I would not live there, no thanks. The culture is designed to spoil men totally. My family member lived in the country with a dirt poor family. They had plenty of food reasonable shelter decent water. They made their money working in a factory and grow a majority of their own food. They do not like outsiders. Many Foreign people go to these little hamlets and towns out in the country and never make it back. The city has armed guards and heavily armed police and military during the day, when the shops all close and the security leaves the rebels come in and “recruit” or kill. Its a violent place but, they manage to keep things moving along.They are a proud strong country. Exactly what is the issue?

One thing I used to admire about America was that it didn’t seem to me like a country that would send its army around the world to subdue its enemies. It was waging a war of cultures. Everything from American music to American clothing is sold worldwide. People protest against capitalism while drinking coca cola cans. It seemed to me like it did things discreetly, possibly somewhat slower, but with a fuller effect while maintaining its image.
On to the next point, I didn’t say the bloodshed will stop. In a sense it will, the fight will no longer be against foreign elements but domestic ones. I disputed your argument that total war against some abstract dividing line is possible or will have the desired effect.
I don’t support pulling out of any war that a country has started due to the obvious repercussions, but then again you’re attacking points I never made. I’ll just reiterate, total war against a religious belief seems impossible. Doing so violates all the principles America championed after world war 2. All Jews are trying to take all that you possess and deceive you and yours. Kill them. All Muslims are trying to kill you and yours. Kill them.
Another issue here is that these idiots are presumed to be the instigators but America hasn’t exactly been kind to these people and these countries. I personally would like to see Islam and muslims be restricted to Saudi Arabia and a few surrounding countries, but America is not the innocent victim here.
I’ve lived in the Philippines too, no need to exadurate the violence. Filipinos are typical of other peoples of the region, quite pleasant and reserved. Five hundred years of Western expoitation does not change the fact that like the entire rest of the region, Sanskrit was once used and the culture is heavily influenced by China.
This is an odd and peculiarly American view of the Philippines; a mish-mash of hundreds of racial, linguistic and religious groups, simmering in civil war, (exactly the same as Iraq, and with the same root causes: borders drawn by Imperial powers).
