The question is: can there be no police? Because mafias are private-funded police.

Organized crime isn’t 1:1 with the police, because it is naturally occuring. Let us expand.
Organized crime is what happens when crime starts running into itself. It is made up of the violent natures who will do violence no matter what. Those types. Now, when these types start running into eachother and organizing, they inevitably, subconsciously do it along hard core conservative lines. What everybody feels inside. No rapists, no this, no that. They monopolize violence naturally, and have a natural conservative tendency.
It’s not private police because nobody hires them. They are funded by monopolized crime like drug dealing or hookers or rackets. It’ the opposite of police: rather than enforcers going corrupt, they are criminals who somehow become enforcers.
They operate on principles like gentlemen’s agreements, handshakes, answering with your life, etc.
Their values are intense versions of whatever is conservative in the locality they operate in.
Is that so horrific?
They also cut the massive cost of police, and redirect some of the crime money into actually useful things. It is self sustaining and stable.
Somebody is going to walk around with a gun and tell you what to do. Welcome to life. Who would you rather it be? Who do you trust more?

No, i am afraid i dont follow. You are now mixing together multiple concepts such as white collar crime vs violent crime and then abstracting that even further by implying that technically even the police is just a form of organized violence.
At this point you are basically just discussing the way homo sapiens organizes itself into societies, groups and tribes, and if you go this far, then the topic’s original question has no meaning either because its just “groups fighting groups”, so removing the police would change nothing because even after that it’d be just “groups fighting groups”.
From a bird’s eye view this statement might be correct.

I think you’re conveniently glossing over the fact that organized violence outside of the police is not some abstracted fantasy, but a running operation in everywhere on the Earth without exception.
According to you it’s some unimaginable scenario, but, in reality, it would be a small stretch to just not having police and organized crime filling the gap.
So this is the real life quesiton. Not some abstract Mad Max scenario. Just how horrible would it be if your local biker gang or equivalent took over the streets because the police shut its doors.

What you have are robot AIs using non-lethal force that act as detainers and courts at the same time. A crime is committed, and the robot rolls up and goes through all the protocols. It decides what kind of charges should be brought, sentencing, all that shit. No jail bullshit. You get sentenced right there on the spot and a transport is called to take your ass to the yard.

In order to make accurate and informed decisions about the nature of the crime, the defendant, etc., it has to know a lot about the defendant. So, each person has an event recorder implanted in one of their eyes at birth so every moment of their lives is recorded and stored in the Alphaplexon AI for purposes above. No human being can ever view this footage… it’s stored in an incrypted matrix cloud that recodes itself every .4 quintillionths of a millisecond… so you’d have to be 189,936,719,003,884,772,710 times more smarter than Turing to break it. This ensures that he who is wilthout sin casts the first stone. That there be no biased and fallible human reasoning. No interference of rational judgment by overheated emotions, angry, vengeful people that never walked a mile in my man’s shoes. The Alphaplexon is like Piaget on steroids and knows every thing that fucked you up and made you a gangsta. That’s how mercy, competence, tolerance, and compassion is exercised in judgment and in serving justice.

It would be a lot worse than the ‘movie version’ (why do Americans always ‘think’ in terms of what ‘happens in movies’? It’s bizarre and disturbing).
The police of modern democracies are a miracle of human social evolution. Be very careful what you wish for (or wish to ‘not’ have). Of course they aren’t perfect-- because humans aren’t perfect. A well run police force has just ‘the right’ amount of power. A ‘goldilocks zone’ where it has neither too much nor too little power. You only have to look at genuine police states where the police have far too much power to see what happens. ‘Power corrupts…’ is one of the most fundamentally true statements regarding human nature that has ever been uttered.

I don’t see why it should be so much more difficult to ponder a hypothetical in this scenario than a dozen others that a philosopher or scientist considers without even noticing.
Forget the warnings and danger lights and fears and horrors. Forget whether it makes you cool or a nerd or some kind of trouble maker. Just give me a straight answer. Read the question carefully, and answer it.
What would be so horrible. Call it Hell’s Angels just to put a face on it. If you want to defend the police, do it in comparison. Because why not? You aren’t signing up for anything, be cool.
