I am scared of death, yet I live to see it. Is there any hope for me to not die? Can it be stopped, and if it can, what will be the consequences of our actions? Am I alone through it all, or will there be HOPE for all of us? Why am I scared, and why will everything I do, I hope, I wish, I think, and I believe die with me? or will over coming death destroy the purpose of live? maybe its the fact of not knowing that scares me the most!
Thre fact of not being is what scares me. I simply will no longer be. That’s a scary thought.
me too
Its in ur genes to die. Usually. Its not impossible that u’ll never die. But if you’re aging, its a good indication that you will eventually die.
Death is only scary if you hang onto life and don’t overcome your own self preservation instincts to be scared of death. But then thats pretty tough. Fear is only possible when you are alive, unless you believe in afterlife, so you can’t be scared once you’ve died.
I think I’m correct in saying that people are actually only scared of not living anymore as opposed to actually being dead. Unless of course they believe in afterlife, in which case they’re probably only scared of the fact that they don’t know what will happen. Otherwise, I think people are just scared of the pain of dying, not knowing when its going to happen, what they will lose when in happens and how everybody who cares for them will cope. Correct me if I’m wrong.
And again, unless of course you believe in afterlife, there will be just as much consequence & purpose to ur actions if u never die as there would if you do die. And you will be just as alone when you die as you are when you are alive, and just as alone when you’re actually dead - unless of course some crazy thing happens when you die which nobody can know about because nobody will live to tell the tail. Unless they come back to life - but then how can you believe them?
Bottom line is you can’t know and because a fundamental requirement of knowing is living, ie not being dead. You can only believe. And with belief, there is always hope.
If I had to make a bet, I would bet that you won’t die.
I am alive. I know life. i don’t know death. Therefore my only sensible bet is to be on life.

The way you overcome death is simple - realise that it doesn’t exist! Yeah, so material stuff comes together and falls apart (ie bodies) but they are not the part of you that is “life”. And the more you think about it the more obvious it becomes.
But if you’re scared then you owe it to yourself to investigate the matter fully. You are worrying over nothing!
DALE
Hopefully that makes you feel better.
in the grand scheme of things, death is the least of yur worries. the concept of live is remembering. the reason one feels pain is because you remember it. the reason why you fear spmething is because one can remember something unsettleing about it. death is the absence of memory. when and if you die, your dead brain seizes to function. and you dont remember, that is all. no lies, no truth, no pain, no death. quite a downward concept, death is inescapable but its true. and when u lose memory, you gain happiness.
The hope for life after death is the ultimate exercise of wishful thinking I know of! If true, it would make the universe unnecessarily even more complex. Complexity normally has a purpose. What would be its purpose?
Even more complex THAN WHAT? How much do you think we know compared to what there is to know?
This attitude amazes me. How can there NOT be life? You ask about purpose but can you think of anything less purposeful than us having conscious self aware intelligence and then just losing it all in an instant? Now THAT doesn’t make any kind of sense at all.
Death/non consciousness is an unknown, Life/consciousness is a known… so why does everybody seem to believe in death more than they believe in life? (maybe it will make you think about things you don’t want to think about…hmmm… quick, put your head back in the sand!)
Even a materialist “worst case” senario still equals continuous life. Think about it: You’ve come into existence once, yes?, so even if you do “die” and become nothingness (which is impossible) a few zillion years may go past then you will be conscious again. This amount of time will go past in an instant and you’ll be alive again.
When you ‘die’, you will still be conscious. You will still have your memories and experiences. Nothing to worry about. …ok!
If anybody can PROVE to me death of my body is the end of my consciousness, I’ll reconsider. Till then there is only one intelligent , logical, conclusion…
DALE
How will this be possible when you will no longer be concious of ‘I’?
If ‘‘you’’ can prove to me that death will not bring my conciousnous to an end. I’ll reconsider. Till then there is only one intelligent, logical, conclusion…
Evidence people, evidence.
That’s damn good news! I won’t worry, I’ll be happy…knowing I can STILL send emails to remind others of their philosophical discrepancies! I’ll still be useful…makes me want to cry
hahaha! yep, fraid so!
Actually it will be T-mails (thought mails), not e-mails in the next life…

Life after death is fairy tale gobbledeegook and not worth serious discussion.
Cells are geneticly programmed to die. It may be possible now or in the future to eliminate that programming.
But don’t kid yourself, programming is all there is
Beeeep. Good GUESS but wrong.
“not worth serious discussion” what a cop out!!! you don’t WANT to discuss. That is your CHOICE. And you want as many people as possible to agree with you so that it keeps your comfort zone snug. Like I said, heads in sand…

Show me a gobbledeegook fairy tale as real as thisl.
Come back with stronger evidence than this for consciousness NOT surviving material ‘death’… alternatively just go back to your pointless dream.

There is no afterlife. Your fear of dieing is programmed into your genes, but totally irrational. You want to know what happens after you die?
The same thing that happened before you were born.
Nothing.
“programmed in your genes”
Man! Some of our wisdomlovers talk about real heavy stuff just like that!
Evidence people, evidence!
Cop out, no. Rational dismission, yes.
Perhaps you feel the existance of never never land and the harvest of its ice-cream trees is also worth serious discussion?
There is no difference between the two. My head isn’t in the sand, I look reality straight in the face without a metaphysical candyland fairy tale filter.
You should try it.
I’ll tell you what. If you can provide one good reason to lend the idea of an afterlife credibility, I’ll admit I was just copping out, and that I am just trying to rally people to my viewpoint to somehow secure my ‘comfort zone’(what a load of crap)
But since I know you are incapable of doing that, I wont hold my breath.
errr…I am not making some far out metaphysical claim…this is hard science.
Here is the results of 5 seconds of googling for those of you that are somehow incapable of doing the same…

Yes my man, you are making a very heavy chemistrical, biological, psychologicial, physical and metaphysical claim. What’s the suff that you are saying as things that are already in our genes? Leptons? Hardrons? Bosons? What, mate? What?
