Christianity: Poly- or Monotheistic?

The Trinity:

  • Three representations of a single being (monotheism).
  • Three separate mutually exclusive beings (polytheism).
  • Three separate mutually exclusive beings (more than one deity, yet still monotheism)

This whole trinity business is a little misleading i think. If the tenants of Christianity are true and valid then there are only 2 options:

A) Either there is only one deity that shows itself in three different forms
B) There are three mutually exclusive deities. God, Jesus and the “holy ghost”.

I’m inclined to think that there are three separate deities. After all Jesus is the son of god, and sits at his right hand and all that jazz, so I think thats grounds for assuming that they are separate beings.

Another weird aspect of Christianity I’ve seen is the inconsistency in bumper sticker sayings. I’ve seen “Love God” and “Love Jesus” in equal amounts for the most part. What’s the difference between the two? If Jesus and God are the same being, then why do they call the god “God” with a capital G? Why not call him “Jesus”? Can you love Jesus more than God and have no repercussions? What about the other way around? Or are they the same being and it doesn’t matter which name you choose, “Jesus” or “God”? I’m looking for the dogmatic/biblical response here to this question, not your own personal faith.

And this “holy spirit/ghost” thing is a mystery to me. I will admit that I have no idea what it means. Its always Jesus this, or God that. I’ve never heard anyone say “love the holy spirit”. Someone please enlighten me.

I choose 3.

I chose 3 as well, but wanted more options.

The trinity is a funny thing.
It allows for the benefits polytheism might provide,
yet also benefits from the advantages of monotheism at the same time.

It is extremely useful, clever, and devious.

Am I really supposed to feel that God was sad when he sent his son to die on the cross? Was he sad? Was he not killing himself? Why would God accept himself as a sacrifice for our sins? It’s all fcked up and complete bullsht!
