I say we rename it Corporate Bullshit day
I know, I’m real romantic-- there is nothing wrong with expressing your love to someone… but please people don’t buy those damn cards make one out of construction paper or something Jesus.
You do realize if people did not buy they would not produce. The part of this particular Valentines day that just had me rolling in laughter is the phone commercials… how is it romantic and sexy to give someone a phone?
You just gave that person an added expense, a debt. I mean really is that love? Ahh the court TV shows will be filled with exes fighting over the bill. He/she gave me the phone… I did not say I would pay the bill!..
The fighting that will ensue because idiots buy what they are told is a romantic object. Serves em right.
Oh boy a red phone, for valentines-- thats another $50 a month! The best though is getting your love a brand new car $30,000 valentines day gift will get you laid!
See, Now that is romantic home or hand made things, or something that enhances your recreational time, My guy gets me fishing equipment or tools. To me that is sweet and thoughtful. He knows how I enjoy spending my time.
Although hint to you all if you share a recreation don’t do what my guy did on our second Anniversary…
He bought me a fishing vest, I thought it was so cool, kissed and hugged him. Then he asked if he could see it. I handed back to him and went to do something or other. He comes up to me and holds out his fishing vest. I take it and he says you know the one I bought you is not good enough for you, You should have this one it was more(hesitation) expensive… His was about 6 months old and had been used by him several times. But it was better? I could only laugh, it was just so transparent. I said sure and hugged him again laughing. As he turned I did kick him in his butt. A slight discussion happened at that point, but, since I was not insulted or mad it did not go far, He apologized and confessed that the new one actually fit more comfortably. Such is love… 23 years later we still laugh over that one and we still have both cherished vests.
Just don’t do that unless you are real sure of your mate Happy valentines day folks, make it about love, not items.
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. It’s no less based on consumerism than christmas. And it really just depends on how you decide to celebrate. Big deal if some people buy into the corporate sponsored valentines day. I don’t think it’s something to really get upset about.
It wouldn’t be a corporate event unless there was some social origin to it. If you live in a society that doesn’t have all these random ‘celebrate something’ days, you’ll find that people will go out of their way to find a reason to have a few drinks or just go out with some friends. The corporations simply make money off what already was. You should embrace these celebratory events, it doesn’t have to be materialistic, rather than the angsty teen “i’m too clever to blend in with society” cliche. It’s easy to say you hate valentine when you have noone to celebrate it with; if you do, you have no reason to care.
I did read, what I was trying to say is that people like to buy something nice, and don’t like to use construction paper, because more often than not, material value has a direct connection with the emotional/non-material. Additionally, people like to have a reason to celebrate something, anything, and that pretty much always has something material related to it. People want to spend, the companies are more than happy to indulge.
