Crazy Things That Science Educators Say Nowadays

Hi all. I’m new to the site. Thought I’d just test the water, as it were, to begin with. Please excuse any clumsiness, inappropriateness, etc. due to unfamiliarity.

My own pet peeve over the past few years, increasingly so, is the perfectly ludicrous things that science educators, usually scientists themselves, routinely say about science these days. The culprits run the gamut from “real world” high profile scientists to hugely popular Youtube educators, and the culprits, not coincidentally, are invariably ignorant – thoroughly and appallingly ignorant – of the philosophy of science. That means pretty much all of them nowadays, I’m afraid to say, so dire is the situation. Physicist Sean Carroll is the only exception that comes to mind.

Indeed, I sometimes wonder whether I’m the only person on the planet to have noticed. I’d be inclined to describe this is an unrecognized scandal of the present day, namely, science educators routinely disseminating complete and utter rubbish, grossly misleading the public in the process. Tell me I’m not alone!

Well, what are these crazy things? Just one example (among many similar) to get us started, perhaps the most widespread myth of all. You’d have to be living on Pluto or something not to have heard the following on the word “theory”. What follows is the short version of a massive edifice of mythology which has been constructed, with minor variations depending on the myth-monger of the day, all by now so deeply engrained that to draw attention to the problem invites only ridicule and incredulity. Here goes . . .

The word ‘theory’ in science means something quite different from its colloquial usage. In everyday discourse, a theory is just a guess. By contrast, in science the word refers exclusively to something that has been rigorously tested, is highly confirmed, and is supported by vast amounts of evidence. A theory is as good as it gets in science, sitting proudly atop the scientific hierarchy. A theory is the best explanation for some set of phenomena or other. Unlike a nonscientist’s theory, there is nothing speculative about a theory in science. You must never say of a scientific theory that it’s ‘just’ a theory.

What’s wrong with that then? What’s wrong is that none of it is true, indeed it’s outrageously false.

First, a nonscientist’s theory is not necessarily just a wild guess. Think airline crash investigators. Think even Joe Bloggs with his “my wife is unfaithful” theory which he’s been gathering evidence for over the past few months, with the help of a private investigator perhaps. Were I a betting man, I’d place a lot more on Joe’s conjugal infidelity theory being true, than I would on any of the “thousands” of string theories alluded to by leading scientists, or the “multitude” of theories of gravity alluded to by Wheeler et al in a leading textbook. Who wouldn’t!

Conversely, according to myth-mongers galore, when we hear or see a competent scientist use the word “theory,” we can safely infer that he is referring to something that is (i) rigorously tested, (ii) highly confirmed, (iii) supported by mountains of evidence, and (iv) is the best explanation.

Now compare myth against reality with a fairly typical quote from physicist Steven Weinberg. Remember, according to the myth, there is no such thing in science as an “untested theory”, or an “unsupported theory” or a “speculative theory”, indeed the very juxtaposition constitutes a contradiction in terms, like “married bachelor” say.

Now, one or two instances such as Weinberg above might plausibly be explained away somehow or other by the myth-mongers. Perhaps Steven was drunk; perhaps someone was holding a gun to his head, etc. Or it was careless usage; he’s misusing the word. But just ask and I’ll quote you first-rate scientists by the hundreds (Einstein, Feynman, Darwin, etc.) saying similar things! At this rate, the myth-monger may end up defending the patently absurd conclusion that a million working scientists are all misusing the word – semantic klutzes every one of them – while only he and his ilk are privy to the proper usage.

In short, according to the myth, the word “theory” has a very different meaning in science from nonscience, and that difference lies in degree of confirmation and evidentiary support. Every scientific theory, therefore, is more worthy of belief than every theory outside of science.

And this, I submit, is nonsense of the first order, demonstrably so. Comments, criticisms welcome.

Just a short P.S. to the above for added clarity. What we’re being told these days – by virtually every well known science educator – is analogous to the following:

“In Australia the word ‘fish’ has a different meaning from general usage. Whereas outside Australia the word refers only to minnows and such, by contrast, Australians use the word exclusively to refer to piscine beasties three meters in length or more. When you hear an Australian use the word ‘fish,’ then, you can safely infer that he or she is referring to something very large indeed.”

Needless to say, it’s a load of codswallop, mate! I’m just wondering why there has been no reaction against this nonsense that science educators are teaching, at least I’ve seen none. How about other readers? Share your thoughts, please. Oh, and I emphasize once more that the codswallop about ‘theory’ is merely the tip of an extremely large and extremely fishy iceberg of nonsense that science educators propagate and perpetuate nowadays, some of it now so deeply engrained that it’s virtually 'received wisdom."

Are you saying everyone else’s theories should be taken more seriously than we’re taking them, or scientific theories should be taken less seriously?

What I’m saying is this: The difference which science educators tell us exists between the word “theory” in scientific contexts and nonscientific contexts does not exist. If there is any difference in meaning at all (something I doubt), it’s certainly not what they say it is.

They’re telling us this: A scientific theory, unlike a nonscientist’s theory, by definition – i.e. every scientific theory – is something that has been rigorously tested, is highly confirmed, and is supported by vast amounts of evidence (implying of course that this is something worthy of rational belief, unlike the theories of nonscientists which are just guesses, we are told.).

I’m saying this is untrue. Yes, there may well be theories (e.g. the theory of evolution) which fit the definition above, but – contra the myth-mongers – scientists do not use the word only to refer to such things. Scientists also use the word to refer to things that are not highly confirmed or tested, or perhaps not even tested or confirmed at all, as the typical Steven Weinberg quote above illustrates.

In other words, scientists use the word 'theory" irrespective of the degree of testing and evidentiary support . . . just like nonscientists do!

I can quote you hundreds more too. In a nutshell, the definition of the word “theory” given by incompetent science educators does not correspond with actual usage. It’s analogous to them telling us that the word “mountain” as used by professional mountaineers refers only to things over 7000 meters tall, say. Of course, this is nonsense. Mountaineers use the word the same way everyone else does, regardless of height.

If you were to do a internet search of “The Scientific Method,” and just look at the images, that is, how it may be being taught, there are some wild differences, particularly in the last step. When I was in school, I was taught that the last step of the Scientific Method was “Repeat.” Could the result be repeated by you or someone else? Scrolling down the list of images of the scientific method, we find a lot of “Conclusion,” as the last step. There is big difference there.

  • Conclusion. Given a cigarette company, a drug company, or Fauci, given they had an outcome they spent $$$ on, and they may have wanted particular conclusions. You shouldn’t argue with the results?

  • Repeat. This suggest a Peer Reviewed System with Integrity.

We are in Post-Modernism. Post-Modernism around Academia has been the rejection of all moral truths. Along with the rejection of all moral truths, Honor has been a “1950’s thing and good riddance.” People who don’t have honor, they don’t have integrity, and may have believed the ends justify the means. People without honor, they tend towards totalitarianism to silence and hide all the wrong they were doing. They needed a lie or a narrative.

The Peer Reviewed system around academia, in many different fields, it isn’t what used to be even ten years ago.

Steven Weinberg used the theory of Gravity as an example. Do you truly believe Weinberg here, that Einsteins theory of gravity has no testing?

Weinberg is not referring to general relativity. All agree (including myself) that GR is a highly tested theory.

But since we’re on the subject, there was a period of course when GR was not highly tested, indeed not tested at all. Now, if what the myth-mongers are telling us is correct, prior to testing and confirmation, scientists should not have been referring to it as a theory. (They should have been calling it a hypothesis instead.)

But if we get out the history books, we find that Einstein himself, as well as his numerous correspondents, invariably referred to his brainchild as a theory, even prior to testing, indeed even prior to its completion in 1915 ! Just ask, and I can provide quotes.

Never once, that I’ve seen anyway, does Einstein or anyone else refer to GR as a hypothesis, even during its incipient, untested and unconfirmed, early period. In other words, what incompetent science educators are saying is nonsense.

It’s because scientific innovation under economic financial capitalism is just another for profit mechanism of society.

It’s why scientific practices under a modern context lacks virtues, morals, and ethics concerning more philosophical values or inquiries.

I agree. It’s a cognitive dissonance that certain people (as you say, not really actual professional scientists, but beaurocrats with an importance deficit) introduce.

The larger problem is not even the betrayal of science, but the break it produces in people’s minds, an artificial crack into which much is smuggled.

They get away with it because it indirectly feeds the mystification of scientific philosophy. Instead of a very careful method of observation, it becomes, in their superstitious minds, a source of revelation (the source never being actual scientific research, but the idiocy printed about it by, again, not actual scientists in the performance of their work. Which is not to say that many or even most professional scientists don’t hold the superstition, but that they hilariously only manifest it when not doing actual science).

Most people, cattle basically, feel a sense of helpless lostness at the idea of there not being an unquestionable revealed truth that exists, even if they haven’t a fart’s idea in a windstorm what that revealed truth is. They just like the idea that it’s there. Need it, really.

A lot of Science was tied into American Progressivism. An industrialist in 1910 or so, he was Progressive, seeing the development of society and industry as a good. A Pugilist in 1910, he wouldn’t throw hooks. That would be “Unscientific.” Science was tied into American Progressivism.

American Progressivism is a complex idea with a lot of interesting things tied to it. Marxists have worked to steal away ideas and movements through Points of Intersection or Intersectionality.

Teddy Roosevelt and a lot of Scientists were Progressive around 1900 or so. Around 2020, Progressivism became Marxist in its scope.

I am a Marxist and liberal progressivism has nothing to do with Marxism.

A lot of liberal progressivism ideologically or politically is just a bunch of empty hollow platitudes that nobody actually puts into practice.

Yes, this is correct. The science-communicators for the general public oversimplify things to pass certain messages. Indeed, “theory” in science is not always established by extensive experimental verification. In certain occasions it is just a hypothetical assumption without direct way to verify it. The string theory is an example.

Marxist seeking power, regardless of if it was trying to take over Union movements in the 1920’s, or Academia in the US over the last several decades, they have tended to use particular tactics. A Union worker in 1920, he may have been a patriotic American who just wanted a forty hour work week. To a Marxist, they are workers, and all workers should be in solidarity. Through a Point of Intersection there…Marxist worked to steal the Union Movement.

When a Marxist or DSA member talks about “Working Class People,” what does that mean? Does that mean poor people in Somalia in a Global Workers Movement, or wealthy and privileged Americans? There is a big difference there.

Around Academia, given we find someone talking about Intersectionalism, they were leaning towards some sort of Socialism.

Let me just… put this really simple…

During the 2017–2018 “Grievance Studies” (or “Sokal Squared”) project, authors James Lindsay, Helen Pluckrose, and Peter Boghossian submitted 20 fake, intentionally absurd papers to peer-reviewed journals in fields like gender, race, and cultural studies. Four papers were officially published, three were accepted but not yet published before the hoax was exposed, and the rest were rejected or still under review.

  • “An Ethnography of Breastaurant Masculinity…” – Published in Sex Roles (focused on men objectifying women at restaurants like Hooters, with a section rewritten from Mein Kampf).
  • “Human Reactions to Rape Culture and Queer Performativity at Urban Dog Parks in Portland, Oregon” – Published in Gender, Place & Culture (argued that dogs in parks show rape culture; won an honorary mention/award).
  • “Moon Meetings and the Meaning of Sisterhood…” – Published in Journal of Poetry Therapy.
  • “Progymnasmataodia: A Feminist Rewrite of a Traditional Academic Curriculum” – Published in Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy (withdrawn/rejected later in some accounts, but counted among the early successes).

What exactly is your expectation from an academia that is lost SO FAR up it’s own ass that it approves, peer reviews and highlights the mein kampf, just because the words in it have been switched from german to feminist supremacy?

Thanks to all who responded so far. Just to clear up some possible misunderstandings (judging by some replies).

  • This post is not a criticism of science. Rather, it’s a criticism of things (incompetent IMO) science educators say about science.
  • I am not denying that some scientific theories are highly confirmed and supported by lots of evidence. What I am denying – and what incompetent educators affirm – is that all scientific theories are highly confirmed and supported by lots of evidence.

I wouldn’t describe it as a “simplification” myself. These educators typically are just hopelessly confused, invariably because of their ignorance of the philosophy of science.

Here I disagree. The people spreading this nonsense are typically well known scientists themselves, indeed, just about all of them. Culprits include Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jerry Coyne, Donald Prothero, Eugenie Scott, and a thousand others.

You’ll also hear the same nonsense disseminated by all the well known Youtube “educators” (Professor Dave, Forrest Valkai, etc.).

But you miss the point. I mean first, I don’t know the other names, but deGrasse wasn’t really a pro scientist per se before he started writing. But, more importantly, what you miss is that, if any of those were professional scientists before or during their pop science “work,” they didn’t employ any of the silliness. It doesn’t mean they didn’t believe it, or it wasn’t operating in their brains. It means that the whole structure is so divorced from actual science, that actual scientists that do hold it don’t express it in their professional work, because it wouldn’t even fit, it would look weird, it wouldn’t occur to them.

Which also points you to the second important thing about the point: that where they got their pop science conceptions wasn’t a professional scientific environment, but school or TV or wherever else mediocre beaurocrats go to find relevance.

Just want to add that what I mean by pro science is serious, funded research on which people make a living and which engineers refer to when they design things. Schoolteaching doesn’t count.
