Deleting posts (from "Emojis to add ...")

Not about emojis but is there any reason the ‘delete (rubbish bin)’ button doesn’t work? It just says ‘you do not have permission for this function’. Sometimes I want to delete a comment. Why would that not be allowed, and why have the rubbish bin thing if it can’t be used?

Well that’s not ideal. I’ve removed it from the menu, which is also not ideal.

Deleting posts is restricted to avoid situations where someone deletes half of a conversation and makes the whole thread incomprehensible. But mods can delete posts, and it’s handy to have the button there for that.

It seems there’s no way to only show the button to users who can use it … which as I type seems like it must be wrong, but I don’t see the option. That would be the ideal, plus letting people delete posts until someone replies to the post.

I should really learn how to make plugins for this board software.

Yes. Having the option to delete before anyone has replied would be a really good compromise and would have no effect on the coherence of a thread.

It’s annoying only having the option to ‘edit’, then all the nosey parkers can look at what you’ve edited out of it

It would be cool. There’s many reason why someone might want to delete a post, they might have posted invalid links or embedded media, they might have just got something wrong and noticed it only afterwards, or they might have ranted about something and then regretted it.. cough cough

The only option under those circumstances is to edit the post, but there might not be anything legitimate to replace the original with, or anything further to say.

I can totally understand the dilemma, looks like the software just doesn’t factor this in, although I don’t understand why, as replies without child replies or being quoted are pretty much standalone and deleting them would affect nothing..

This is what the AI came up with:

  1. Custom development : Create a plugin that modifies the can_delete_post? method to check post.replies.count before allowing deletion

You can delete on PN as long as your comment is the last in the thread, after which you can only edit, but at least your ‘before editing’ comments disappear! It’s a completely different system though.
