I am sure that you never understood what James was saying about God. The fella actually defined a half-dozen understandings of who/what God actually is. That puts him in a totally different category than those who simply “believe in God”. He believed in knowing exactly what you are talking about when you say “God”. All of James’ versions of God were about whatever (usually specified by a defined principle) had the ultimate authority over “what could or could not happen”. He was often criticized for equating God to “the laws of physics” to which he explained that the laws of physics were flawed and “God” represented whatever actual and real laws were in effect - “Elohim”.
And while on a Christian apologetic form just thrashing the atheists right and left, most of his reputation points interestingly came from the Jewish membership. I thought it laughable to see him being accused of being antisemitic.
He also defined your real God as simply “your real situation, whatever that might be”. He mentioned that everyone had their own “MyGod” indicating that everyone’s situation is at least a little different.
I felt like his writings pertaining to God were the most honest and rational thoughts on the subject that I have ever read.
Atheists (like myself) don’t delve into “god is this and god is that”. James was riding the coat tails of an archetype psychologically to appear more important than he really was.
